Yeti 575 Chumba XCL shootout (9/29) AND BLT2

Planning on an upgrade soon and I've pretty much narrowed it down to these two frames... Trouble is I can't find a single bad thing said about either one.

I ride mostly local socal but would love to get in a UT or norcal trip sometime in '09 when my schedule eases up. Riding style is XC to aggressive XC/AM. I've been told these bikes are perfect for that. I've pedaled both of them around and they felt equally great.

I know Chumba will be releasing the new carbon rear full susser at interbike but the pricepoint is a bit out of range and I *believe* it's supposed to fill a void below the XCL as far as riding style/capability.

Can anyone provide any input about these two, specifically if you've had the chance to ride one or the other or both?

Thanks for your input, it is greatly appreciated.

    updated 9/29... BLT2 now consideration...

Well never heard anything bad about Yeti.
However do a search on Chuba, there are many locked threads on STR about them..

I have an XCL and personally think its a stronger bike overall. Both ride very differently so to speak, the XCL has less travel but feels about the same when it come to squish. Don't go carbon on the Chumba! if thats the case just stick with Yeti.

I don't have a lot to say about either, but if it helps at all- the 575 and XCL were my two choices when looking for a bike. Test riding both and then decided on the XCL.

Oh one more thing, have you considered the Giant Reign, or Rocky Mountain Slayer at all? Those are both great Bikes as well, and Curt at Rocky Mountain is a great person to deal with!
Get it straight buddy, all those locked threads are because of one person. Not a bike. :)

What bike are you riding now and what are you looking for in a bike? No bike is a do all bike.

I own a Yeti 575. The extra things you may want to think about are things like customer service, etc. I can't say what's Chumba's is like (because I just don't know), but I DO know that Yeti has terrific customer service.

They are two different bikes. You really should ride both and that should not be a big problem as there have been enough demo opportunities with both brands locally and likely will continue to be.

Lots of good choices out there. I think before I narrowed my choices to just two, I would ride as many as possible.

Seems to me that there are other bikes that are more like the XCL than the 575 and vice versa.

I would choose the Yeti if for nothing more than not having to run an e-type front derailleur. On top of that, the Yeti is a great bike. Tons of the guys I ride with ride'em and love'em, and they have great customer service.

Early in March of this year, I built my '08 575. I have nothing but good things to say about it and Yeti. As Dean stated, no bike will do everything... however, the 575 comes close!

I've never ridden an XCL and have nothing bad to say about Chumba. One thing i'm doing now when looking into a new bike (i'm going to build a bike specifically for FR/DH), is check the frame stats very closely to determine the differences in handling: angles, BB height,
    travel, wheelbase, stand-over, etc.

Love my 575!! It's an awesome bike. I've got no personal experience with Chumba's. But, the XCL offers .75" less travel AND the frame is a pound heavier.

Seems needlessly heavy to me. The Yeti is plenty strong too. I'm 225 lbs and the Yeti handles it great. Just one jerk's opinion.

Having the manufacturer local is a big plus. I had an issue with a bolt. I was able to drive in that day and pick up a new one.
If you decide on the chumba get the RP23 option. It seems to work better, especially if your on the bigger side.
    Good Luck.

I was in the same predicament as you, I went with the 2008 575. I just felt that over all it was a little less XC and more AM than the XCL. It was close, and I know I would have been happy with both.

And come on... the 575 just looks better as well.

The chumba XCL is a great bike. Climbs well, descends well and is indestructable (I crash a lot and have yet to even SCRATCH the frame).

However, it is a tank (ie: heavy), requires an e-type derailleur(sp?) and has an exotic chainline, which makes finding cranks a challenge.

And ignore the personal animosity that the brand seems to attract in these parts; I've had no problems with customer service at Chumba and have always had my questions/comments answered immediately.

    Just my $.02

Only read about the Chumba, so no personal experience. I've been happy with my 575; love the way the character of the bike changes by the flip of a couple of levers on the RP23 and TALAS.
