Posting this for STR member CPATCRASH:

Well after living in my condo for a little over four years and never having one problem it was time. I have always worked in my garage and if I needed a drink or to pee I always left it open when I ran upstairs. Well today I was working in the garage and did just that but when I came down my Seven was gone. Please keep your eyes open as I doubt there are many around like it.

It's an ID8 with full Dura Ace, DT Swiss wheels, Time carbon pedals, a Moots ti stem and a Eriksen ti seatpost. I got it in the beginning of 2007

Many years ago I lived with a man and his girlfriend. Nice house in Irvine, quiet cal-de-sac. We each had bikes, all left in the garage. My friend and his girl liked to leave the garage door open (half the time they went upstairs to take a "nap"). I would argue someone can steal our bikes. He argued no its was a nice neighborhood; won't happen. I decided to put my bikes in the back, next to plumbing/washer-dryer and start chaining them up. Yes it was a hassle every time I wanted to ride but one day... friend and GF came downstairs and all 6 of their bikes were gone... Mine were still locked up. The hassle was worth it! BTW friend did not learn his lesson and after getting an insurance settlement and new bikes, still left the garage open... guess what? Bikes stolen again... I moved out...

Cool bike - so sorry for the theft - will keep an eye out for it...

Would you keep an open briefcase filled with $5,000 cash in a garage and walk away even for a couple mins? Basically, consider your bikes a briefcase of cash and never leave them unattended. Ever. Just like bikenpam, my bike is always locked up at the back of my garage. Unfortunately we live in a world where jerks want our stuff. Hope he gets his bike back and more importantly I hope they catch that jerk that took it.

Lock your bikes everyone!! These threads suck.

Thanks everyone and please spread the word.

Ya my roommates and I lock all our bikes up now in the garage and I never leave it open for long even if I'm in there just for the simple fact that someone may drive by and see all the bikes in there. When I work on the bikes, I'll have the garage door open about 1/4, just enough to let air in.

Thanks Dave, but not sure if you noticed that this was a road bike.

This is no place for logic or pragmatic pre-emptive solutions, prorap. You're only allowed to offer sympathy or reactive solutions here. And in the next thread like this. And the next. And the next.

Thanks Gene! I've been looking on Craigslist and eBay but nothing so far. And even though I have been unable to ride for almost two years I still miss that bike. My Kish is now upstairs in my condo and it's locked.

Not that you're implying that I am, but I'm not asking for solutions, sympathy or even a reply. I'm just putting out the word for friend in hopes he gets his bike back, nothing more.

No worries Pat. Hopefully someone will spot it who's read this thread and get you a lead.

I have lived in this place for over four years now and never had an issue. Always work on the motto's and bikes with the door open and will run up to get a drink or pee if needed. Hell, it was even left open overnight accidently (stupid beer) before and nothing. Oh well, lesson learned.

Gene, you're a good man for doing this for a pal or acquaintance. Power to you.

But yes, I am dismayed by how many times this same story plays out. I've been schooled in the past by someone who thought it insensitive or inappropriate of me to post preventative measures in a bike theft thread. In doing that I didn't mean direct any blame/negativity to the victim, but to keep others from becoming victims. (This, I'm sure, will not be agreed with by those who took issue.)

But I do have to add: every time there is a successful pinch of a nice bike, it furthers the notion among the unscrupulous that bikes are expensive, largely unregulated, and can easily be snagged and flipped for quick cash—making every bike owner more susceptible to the crime. Locking your bike inside your garage or house will not keep your bike from being stolen, but I'll bet it reduces its likelihood by ninety percent. But there I go, rose colored specs again. Pardon the digression.

CPAT, best wishes getting your old friend back.
