when dealing with the unkown you have to expect the unexpected. because being an ex cop he has a better idea than you or me who's more adept at carrying a pistol or weapons. the closer he is to the attacker the less reaction time he would need to respond to a brandished weapon. riding away from him on a bicycle wouldn't help much against a bullet or other projectiles. especially if this was some kind of initiation. it was not a provoked engagement. better broken nose than unanticipated gun shot wound or death.

i think my incident was an initiation... the kid was young and there were people there to "back him up" i feel really bad for the kid, he doesnt know whats he's getting himself into.

My MTB Brother. I commend you for the restraint and cool headedness. I personally am a lover not a fighter so I appreciate the example of what to do and what can be done in that situation. Hope the nose shrinks soon.

with all due respect COT, the only thing really shown in the situation was that he got in the guys face (insinuating he was down to fight), then he dodged some punches, then got clocked and received a broken nose...

in my opinion, to really show restraint, one would have kept on pedalling...not stop and pretend like you are down to fight...

Sometimes confrontation is unavoidable (not saying it wasn't here) so the example is a good one to have. I don't have the 16 years on the force nor the training, so I would keep riding if I could, but there may be a time when I have to stop. So the example fits, somewhat anyways.
Thanks for opion, Guero. I like good interaction.

I dont see the restraint on the part of L8 Apex. If he wanted to show his peaceful side he would have kept riding. Instead he stopped his bike, got off his bike and squared up with aggressive gangbanger. If that's not asking for a fight I don't know what is.

Some people have the "fight" gene. We all know people like this. They can't avoid confrontation no matter what happens. IMO 6 (six) Broken noses is a red flag that you might be one of these people.

I'm not judging L8 Apex for standing up for himself. I just dont get the point of his story.

    That's the beauty of a story...it doesn't have to have a point. ;)

But you missed one main thing. I stopped because at FIRST, I didn't realize the guy was a trouble maker. He stopped me to ask me a question. THEN he became confrontational, after I had already been stopped.

If he WAS going to pull something out of his pants (no...not THAT...), I'd rather be right in front of him within arm's reach, rather than have my BACK facing him, just 10 feet away. And no, I would NOT have been able to get away from him on my gear-skipping single speed. If he had a gun or a knife, I would have been an easy target had I tried to get back on my bike and pedal/chain skip away (my chain jumps teeth if I pedal hard).

Not to mention, we were out front of my house. about 35 feet from my front door, but he stopped me just before I would have turned to head up my driveway...he would have seen where I lived had I "just kept going." Not the brightest idea. ;)

Like they say in football...this was one of those situations where the best defense was a good offense. Though I guess mine could have been a little more...well...offensive. LOL!

Oi! man always swing first and follow it up while they are trying to figure out what happened when dealing w/ people who fight for a living.

Of course if they are four times your size hit and run they won't catch you anyway....

If they are a gang member they are used to getting their ass handed to them and lawyers are not in their budget.

    Cheers,
