Just want to make sure and check everyones experience. I got an X-9 short cage with 11-26 cassette and 36T single chainring front with chainguide. If I want to go up to a 11-34 cassette, and obviously lengthen the chain, will the X-9 short cage work in that setup? What has been your experiences with this setup? Thanks to all who chime in.
depends on the bike and how the rear suspension travels. If on a hard tail or a shorter travel bike you should have no problems. Some of the longer travel bikes tend to "grow" a bit as they go through their travel and thus pull a lot more on the drivetrain requiring a bit more "stretch" of the chain. On my DH bikes I run an X-9 short cage with an 11-25 cassette and a 40t ring up front. Years ago I ran an 11-34 cassette with no problems.
For a Full on Techy type answer....No a short cage x9 will nmot work with a 34 tooth cassette.......the max tooth for that deraielr is 32. Thats Srams answer. Now for a real world answer Sjo n got the general answer..... but as DBD pointed out, it is a general answer, you have to take into account suspension growth.
Most people don't really understand what a derailleur actually does. For what it's worth, here the best thing I've ever read on what a derailleur does and how you select the correct size: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=205890
I don't see why not. mine works fine on my reign with an 11-32, and that has a 2 link growth at full travel. if you're worried about it, just get the 11-32 and pedal a bit harder. it'll be lighter too
for everyones info, its for an IH Sunday. I just wanted to pedal uphill a little better (when needed of course). I do not know if there is excess chain growth on that frame, but I presume not.
Thats very interesting, the Manual I have in the garage says different, then agian its three years old, and the info may have been updated since then. It could be as simple as Sram made a small mod to the derailer in the past years as well, the short cage one I had that came with the manual was pretty damn noisy when in the 34.
I was always told to run a long cage on a 3 ring setup and from the articles above i can know see that is the safe thing to do. Thanks for the explanation and hopefully I will remember it at the right time.
I run a sram med cage on a 1x9 set up...in 32/32 it is noisy. Small cage I cant imagine sounding better.
Of coarse... In fact it was maxxed out, I should mention its teh bike I took to Barnetts with me, everyone there decided the same thing as well.
Interesting, now I'm curious if they made a change to the short cage in '08 or if there is a functional difference between the XO and X9.
Just installed the PG990 11-34 cassette and it all works just fine. No added noises. I have '08 X-9 short-cage and handle the larger cassette just fine, shifting was perfect didn't have to adjust a thing. Now I have a PG970 DH 11-26 cassette for sale.
