My friends and I are thinking about riding Blackstar tomorrow in honor of MLK Day, but don't know if it will be in riding condition because of the rain.

Based on past experiences, what trails should be in good shape?

We enjoy Whiting and Aliso a lot too. But no Fully loop status please cus we like riding our Mountain Bikes on mountain bike trails

Worst case, get some mud tires.

Checked OCParks twitter, no trails seem to be closed yet.

I did Whiting Ranch 2 days after the rain one time, and the climb up Mustard wasn't fun. Mustard is never fun for me anyways but add in the mud and it sucked haha. The downhill part was okay though. I've never done BStar so can't chime in there.

(BTW, Whiting was awesome today. Trails were perfect condition. Not dusty, semi-packed. Nice and cool weather.)

I read on the national weather service that they're only expecting 1/4 of an inch or so (www.noaa.gov) so even Blackstar might be fine depending on when you were going tomorrow. But, based upon my past experience, I wouldn't ride Blackstar tomorrow. But Maple Springs would be fine, I would think, and Santiago Truck Trail likely would be ok--you could do Old Camp. Even Harding prob would be good. The parks probablly will be unpredictable; I'd stick to Cleveland NF. My 2 cents.

Black Star is the worse place to ride after rains. The clay content in the soil will load up your tires and prevent them from turning.

If enough rain in area, parks like Aliso and especially Whiting will be closed due to muddy conditions. Lots of threads on this already. Please check the "stickies" on this. These are found in the Trailhead Forum

    Best Trails after a Rain?(merged)

Be sure to call the park or check the link to their website:
