10 sp chains are narrower to fit in the smaller gap between cogs on the cassette

I bought a used cyclocross bike with a 10sp drivetrain and spent hours trying to adjust the rear derailleur. It would shift under load, and wouldn't really get into 3rd or 8th gear. I caved and took it to the shop, who read the side of the chain and immediately noticed it was a 9sp chain. New 10sp 105 chain and everything was gravy. In short, 9sp chain with 10sp cassette = no bueno.
