Why do you always crash the hardest when you're feeling the best on the bike?

    Alternate title: Ow, %$(@&@^@!!!!

It's been rainy all week back here in NY, so when the clouds cleared this morning, I took the opportunity to go take some runs at the local DH/ freeride trail. Last run of the day, and I'm feeling really good. Jumps are flowing, getting my drift on in the corners, everything is going great. Near the bottom, get the rear wheel a little too far out on one corner, and the top of berm gives way. I loose some grip, and come off line. Front wheel clips a root protruding from a big stump, and slides up it into the stump. Bike stops, I go OTB still clipped in. Right hand hits tree, still on the bar, then I fall over and plow my left knee into a rock. #-oIt starts to swell up and turn purple immidatly, so I roll down the rest of the trail to my car. I had to stop half way home (and it's only a 15min drive) to give my knee a rest- operating the clutch f'ing hurt. Have it on ice now, watching the hockey game. It's still really swolen and stiff. Hope this doesn't last too long, I want to ride.

Soooper seekrit ones. ;) Ithaca area.

Why, are you from NY, or spend much time over here? I'm always happy to play tour guide, if you're going to be in the area.

It's still really swollen and sore, but I took a little pedal around my yard and that didn't make it feel any worse. I'll try riding to work in a little bit and see how that goes. Doesn't look like I did anything too bad, just some nasty bruising.

Yep...usually the way it goes. Feel good, get over confident and push the limits...then it blows up on you. You should definitly get that knee mri though.

I'm originally from NY. Not Ithica, but the Albany area. Although every trip back east is so quick I never have time to ride, BUT if I do I'll let you know for sure. Maybe in September...

Answer to your original question: When you are riding good, you push yourself and progression leads to falls, which means you are improving as a rider. Simple as that.

The key words are "last run of the day!"

It seems like when you think to yourself "OK, just one more. No biggie" is exactly when disaster strikes.

    It's happened to me, too.

you feel best on the bike when you push it, riding at the edge of your comfort zone yet still in control
unfortunately you also crash hardest when you push it

i completely relate to what you're feeling
some of my worst crashes have been when i felt the best on the bike
trick is to not let it get the best of you

    heal up dude
