Agreed! I want to beat my time I had last year, not get slowed up. But it's all up to Mother Nature right?

That will be tough to do. Last year the course was as fast as it's ever been, this year with all the rains, the creek crossings are deeper and longer. Most that you were able to ride through last year, you'll have to dismount and rock hop. Those doing the VQ will see the amount of boulders that are now scattered in the creeks on Trabuco. Not rideable. Also keep in mind, the finish line was moved into O'Neill which will add time, but Trabuco Creek Rd was graded and much smoother so that'll help.

What is the prime reason for showing ID at the end of the event if this is not considered a race or international event? It was never required before.

If I had to guess, it would be insurance and liability issues. If somebody who secretly transferred their number plate to another, non-registered rider, and that other rider had an accident and had to be airlifted out, for example, you can imagine the trouble it would cause... as well as the potential liability issues for the WS with respect to their insurance carrier, etc.

Just a guess... there may be other reasons, but if I were the organizer, this would be the one that would cause me to lose sleep at night.

I think requiring to show ID at the finish is a dumb idea. Why not require us to show our ID when we pick up our wrist band instead of at the finish?

I know that I will be suffering out there and my jersey pockets will be filled with all kinds of food. and tools. I wont always be thinking to remove items carefully and might accidentally lose my ID while on the ride.

Gene, is there any way you that it would be possible for us to show our IDs when we pick up our wristbands instead of when we cross the finish?

I don't think that would solve the problem of making sure that the person who signed up is the person who finishes. ;)

If the person who finishes does not have the wristband, then the are not the one who checked in (who was actually registered).

I'm assuming they will be similar to the wristbands you get in the hospital. Switching them from user to user is not the easiest thing to do. Plus, who would wake up that early, check in, then give their wristband to someone else?

Either method is easy to beat.
Option #3 - In the morning check ID and mark the skin (hand? neck?) of each entrant with an ink stamp. At the finish look for the mark. Feed stations could look for the same mark to weed out freeloaders.

The wrist band is to show you are in the event so you get aid at the aid stations and will also be your meal ticket. You will receive those in the morning.

As far as ID's at the finish. I'm not the event director and have no say. I will have my ID with me
at the finish just like everyone else.

Jay - take this as a good thing, trust me. I believe most of the "yahoos" that drive up this road are off-road guys that are looking for something to 4x4. Well, with most of that all gone I have seen less and less "yahoos" on TCR.

I wouldn't lose sleep over this scenario. Even if there was an improper participant, mountain biking certainly qualifies as an obviously-dangerous activity and "assumption of the risk" defenses win the day. Yes, yes, yes... anyone can technically try to sue for anything, but it's no nightmare scenario.

Glad to see about the weather. Anyone have any first-hand ride reports from the maple, peaks, or holy jim sections (2nd half of the race) within the last few days?

Looks like it will be a bit humid Saturday. Lots and lots of sweat for sure. Endurolytes I will be popping.

    Have fun everyone.

I rode some portions on Sautrday. Some spots on the MD were very muddy. Maple springs had a few mud pits. Motorway was great. I came up Bedford so I can't comment on Blackstar, but Bedford was very muddy.

Hopefully the sun dries it up some.
