So, anyone else have a Sponsorhouse account? Just wondering what your feelings are?

BTW, has anyone used the new "Hookup" feature to buy stuff?

I do. It's useful for finding a lot of companies interested in sponsoring athletes.

A couple of nits about the interface. I wish it would save a standard "resume" for the rider/athlete to submit to sponsors. Not to sound like an ass, but most of the questions are the same from one company to the next and it'd be nice for consistency's sake to be able to submit something from your resume to the company without having to rewrite it. Also, it's kinda like how I feel about MySpace. The interface is so busy and there's so much going on it takes a case of Mountain Dew and a sideways ballcap to feel like it's written for an old dog like me.

I don't pay for an upgraded account as the 10 sponsor free account is fine for me.

One thing to watch out for are what I'd call fake sponsorships. Sounds ungrateful, but there are more than a few companies that offer "sponsorship" for discount on their products that still net out to be higher than what you'd pay if you went into a retailer and bought the product. But you have the option to decide if it makes sense to accept each offer, so it's not like you're getting duped into anything.

I had one when they were a start up site. It has been so long since I used it the account seems to have vanished (more likely I forgot the log in info and the email I used I no longer have). ;)

I just set another up. Check yer requests Nancy.

do you have to race in events to get sponsored?

I would just like to get sponsored to ride my bike around on trails and wear/use/promote the product lines.

After reading this thread a few weeks ago I opened an account there.

I like the idea of having a page devoted to my racing. Nice to be able to keep track of my results and stuff there.

As for the sponsors it seems it's really just a way for them to market their products, although some do offer pretty good discounts. I don't know if it's really a sponsorship, but like someone else said, it's good support. I'm happy to get a discount for stuff I normally use anyways. From what I've seen many offer 40% - 50% discounts.

My guess is many companies would still sponsor you even if you don't race.

I beg to differ, free stuff dried up for most of us amateurs a few years ago. When I 1st started racing I worked my way up and got on a team where there was was some free products but not everything was free even for the Pro racers.

My hat is off to anyone in Mountain Bike racing who gets a free ride, we all know it is rare for local racing. ;)

Sponsorhip is any company who offers you a discount in exchange for using and promoting their product. In turn you race, provide exposure and free advertising. There are stipulations and legally binding contracts involved.

It depends on the Sponsor. Most of mine require that I actually race.

This isn't a knock on anyone 'sponsored'. More a criticisms of the companies undercutting their dealers by offering product at a discount instead of encouraging consumer to buy something.

If everyone is 'sponsored' then how is the exposure and free advertising helping them build their brand?

Can I expect to see magazine features with sponsored amateur racers in it? No. How about paid ads with sport lever racers? No.

Sorry but seeing a bunch or beginner/sport racers sporting anything won't inspire me to buy anything. More often than not the most decked our racers are the slowest.

If I worked in the retail world and my suppliers were doing this kinds of stuff I would consider dropping their line. Why would I invest my time and capital in a product that a consumer can purchase elsewhere for less. Espcially if that said supplier has a MAP policy.
