Climb to Santiago Peak - Sunday 5/18

Every year I make at least one trek up to the peak in May or June. I love to take people who have never been - it's quite a view.

Let me know if interested - I am not that fast, but I'm TENACIOUS for a 40 something.

For people who have never been and are worried they won't have the stamina, we could break it into a couple weekends - one ride to four corners via Harding, second ride (following weekend) all the way to the peak. I've also done the Trabuco Canyon, Harding, Santiago, Holy Jim Loop... but that is not for the faint of heart.

    Just looking for riding companions...

I'm interested as well. What are you talking about as far as distance and vertical feet for the ride? I'm always up for long climbing. And any chance you can plan it on a Sunday? I work Saturday's.

I've been tenuous before. Laid off the sauce for a week and got better.

Good advice from Tom. The pavement on Maple sucks, but it is the easiest climb up IMO.
Get an early start too, to beat the heat.

I'd be interested in going if you're doing this in a couple weeks or later.

Wow! Lot of interest! Let me throw out a couple of times and see how people respond.

I like to ride Sunday mornings early. If we can hit the trail by 6:00 AM I am extremely happy :)

The ride to the peak via Harding Truck Trail is 13.6 miles one way (according to my Garmin) with somewhere around 4850 feet of climbing. It is one of the prettiest climbs in Southern California with breathtaking vistas almost the whole way.

The ride to the peak via Maple Springs is 11.7 miles one way and 4200 feet of climbing. The difference between the two rides is that you drive further up Silverado Canyon before you start the ride (versus where you start Harding in Modjeska Canyon) so you spend two miles and 800 feet of climbing in your car instead of on your bike :) Maple Springs is faster and slightly easier, but Harding is prettier :)

If we go Harding, we can do two weekends so people feel really comfortable with the ride. First weekend we will go to Four Corners (about 9.2 miles), and second weekend we will bag the peak. Four Corners is two hours of climbing, but if you can make it past the first three miles, you will be good for the rest of the ride. What do people think?

Sounds great! 6am on a Sunday morning works for me. My vote is for Harding.

6am is perfect. I like maple and work Sundays... However, this is your ride and unlike other group rides posted, I'm not going to try and change it. If I can modify my schedule, I'm in like flynn! :bang:

I think we are going to go at 6 - I'm sorry we'll miss you. The beauty of a 6AM departure is that you are climbing most of Harding in shade (the sun isn't out from behind the mountains yet). It makes a BIG difference in how much you enjoy the ride. Once you get to 3000 feet elevation sun is less of an issue because the temp will be cooler. Right now for Sunday they are forecasting clear skies, wind off the desert, and temps approaching 90. Personally, I would rather be DESCENDING in 90 degree temps than climbing :)

    Ok let's do this.

Sunday, May 12th, Harding Truck Trail to Four Corners.
Departure: 6AM from parking in front of Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary at the end of Modjeska Canyon Road.
Distance: 18.5 total miles - out and back. 3450 feet of climbing.
Bring enough water and consider a powerbar or other snack - you burn a lot of calories.

Confirm on this thread or send me a PM. Send me a PM anyway if you want my cell number, directions to the trail head or whatever.
