probably cuz there isn't many steel frame builders around as of late. Mostly boutique brands.

 

There is something that is really cool about them. They are buff, nearly unbreakable, well-crafted steel frames that can be had for cheap. I'd only trade my 1x1 in for a Ti frame.

 

because they make a frame and fork that can run 4" wide tires!

 

Surly bikes are more punk rock than your bike!

When Surly bikes are little kids, they beat up all the other bikes and steal their chains.

 

I love my Long Haul Trucker! I can tow a trailer off road with 2.0 inch tires, or road tour with 1.25's. The LHT can use 26 or 700 size wheels depending on the frame size, mine's a 54cm w/26ers. It's engineered like a frame five times the price. The geometry fits better than any other bike I've ever owned, and handles telepathically.

I nearly bought one until the Marin came around for a cheaper price. Jenson has them for dirt cheap and it just plain looks cool in that 1980's old skool kinda way.

Surly Bikes fills in a unique niche in the bike market. If you're looking for a cheap, decently-crafted steel frame, Surly is normally your first and last stop. I rode a Surly Instigator (geared, mind you) for a year some time ago and it was a blast to ride. If I didn't already have two steel hardtails in my steed, I would most definitely consider buying another, as a I regret having sold it. Case in point, many Surly owners feel the same about their frames as I did mine.

They're heavy, they're very stiff (i.e., also not a comfortable ride), reasonably strong, crappy quality stickers, so-so quality construction, and as tk said, they're cheap. Those who ride them generally don't get overly wrapped up in frame material discussions.:lol:


But my Surly 1x1 is probably my favorite bike.

 

I have had mine now just over 4 years now and though I hate to admit it, it's probably my favorite bike. I wish I was strong enough to ride it everywhere I take the geary, but I'm not and I still like f/s more for other types of rides. The best thing I like is the geometery, it is about perfect for me, I love the fit of this bike. Frame construction is made of a 4130 cromoly and is on the heavy side, but I didn't buy it for weight, I got tired of fixing my bikes all the time and got together with my LBS and put together my 1X1. I have never had a problem with this bike except a broken chain in the 4+ years I've had it.

I love this bike!

 

They sell versatile steel frames at a reasonable price. I REALLY want a Cross-check. It can work as a 'cross bike or a tourer (has the rack eyelets) depending on your drivetrain/tire setup. Can run wider tires than most 'cross bikes. Semi-horizontal dropouts for single-speeding. Complete off the rack for under $1000.

edit: for the surly thing: they're cheap, reliable, cult-ish (at least they were) and were one of the earliest to embrace both SSing and 29ers with early production bikes.
