what to do about poison oak

hey guys, i just recently got hit with a bit of poison oak. this is my second time getting poison oak. the first time i was not so fortunate of knowing it, and i like to pick things, that was not fun.

so i know this time that i have it and not to pick and scratch . is there any other recommendations you guys know. i just dont want to go to the doctors, wait in line, pay my co-pay, and sit there for an hour so he can give me a cream.

any home remedies yo mamma used to know?

 

Poison Oak....I get it if I'm standing down wind. Seriously, that is how easily I can get it.

Your best bet..... :-k just do your best to not scratch it, it only makes it worse. There are over the counter creams you can buy, Benadryl, Cortazon, etc. they work, but nothing will make the itch stop completely - not even what you doctor gives you.

Scratching the H&% out of it while having hot water running over the area - ALWAYS feels good, :lol: and anybody who has had it will atest to that....but thats not hte way to get rid of it.

I have found that cool air or rubbing ice on it works for a bit too. On smaller patches I have been known to scratch it open and then dapped it with alcohol...burns, but it will dry it out.

You've got a few days to be miserable.....Good luck.

caladryl/calamine lotion, Epsom salts, or bicarbonate of soda

or if you're a trooper apply some lacquer thinner to it. since the irritant is oil based it'll dry up real quick.

Would Zyrtec work?
It's now available over the counter.
It's a hell of a lot more powerful than Benadryl or any other over the counter anti-allergy meds, at least for me.

I have had very good luck with benedryl gel. Its at any drug store.

 

Last time I got the oak, I ended up getting it all over my junk....Don't think sand paper and rubbing alcohol would have been much help in that region, well, unless you are into that sort of thing!:?:

Ended up going to the doctor. After the doc and the group of interns stopped laughing, I was give some cream and some steriods. Cleared up in a short three weeks. :clap:

 

damn dude, they didn't needle your junk did they? eeek! i've gotten pinned between the fingers before and that was creepy enough!

 

Thankfully, Doc took my work for it. The oak was also all over my hand and forearm...

 

i second the scalding hot water relief. if you have enough of the oak, the relief is such a rush it will buckle your knees. I had it 3 years ago on every pore of skin between my ankles and my knees (i got into my jacuzzi after a ride without scrubbing down first). A prescription of Prednisone cleared it up fairly quickly.

 

Paint Thinner

Last weekend after a ride through the brush in Chino, I had an itching sensation on my lower leg. It started to turn red and swell. As soon as we got home, my husband told me to use paint thinner to remove any oils if it was poison oak/ivy/something. Within 15 minutes it was completely gone. I'm trying to figure out how to carry some in my pack.

 

Dude there are a few options. I'll list them from worst to best...from my experience.

1. Lather the infected area with juicy, putrid hamburger then insert said are into a cage of hungry gerbils.
2. I wanted to use the acid thing here, but since its been used...grab an old-school, flat cheese grater and get busy. I've found that an orange peel grater works well.
3. Rub the spot/area with much vigorousness whilst holding steel wool in your hand. Then douse the area, only after the dermis is completely removed, with generous amounts of turpentine, gasoline, paint thinner, or salt. It wont do much for the PO, but it'll make you a man and put hair on your back. And if you want an extra thick coat of manliness on your back, light the liquid of choice on fire and pray for Godly mercy.
4. This is more of a prevention method than anything. Quit having gay sex with your riding buddies. Jeez!
5. Calamine lotion is the only long lasting itch and blister juice retainer. Use it often and generously.
6. If you want to have the closest thing to an orgasm without getting naked with your aforementioned riding buddies or your appendages, both left and right, run hot, and I mean hot, water over the area. It will itch even more than you can ever imagine and at the same time it will give that "tingle" that will make it all worth it. And one clear side affect will be the psychotic desire that will well up in you brain. Its awesome.
7. Kill yourself.

I hope i didnt leave anything out.

Things that dont work.

Cooked oatmeal spread over the area.
Bleach.
Urine.

Cashews contain urushiol, which is the irritant also found in poison ivy. Even “raw” cashews have been steamed to remove this compound. Otherwise, anyone with a reaction to poison ivy could have a potentially fatal reaction to eating cashews.
