Personally, I never listen to music while riding. MTB'ing is my outlet to relieve stress and escape the daily hustle and bustle of suburban living. I prefer to listen to what's around me. I enjoy the sound of solitude and nature while spending time in our mountains & forests.
There are many other opportunites for me to listen to my iPod or stereo.

I like a wide variety from old-school/underground 90's hip hop, older Slayer stuff (Reign in Blood, Show No Mercy, Hell Awaits), Lich King and sometimes even some Rick James "Give It to Me Baby". Silence is nice too but on longer rides hearing music keeps me goin' and sometimes gives me that extra push:bang:

I don't do headphones on the trail either, but Trampled Underfoot from Zeppelins 1977 Cleveland "Destroyer" show often gets stuck in my head and makes me do rash things.

Single headphone (the right) on just about all road rides and only long mtb rides, which because my body (read, knees) can't take the abuse, the mtb rides end up being 50-mile and 12-hr races. As much as a shuffle can handle.

Everything from Zepplin to Offspring to classic 80's to spaghetti western (Ennio Morricone) overtures. Keeps me sane and alert on the long rides (esp, the tail end of double-centuries or mtb epics) by mixing things up after a few Prodigy, on comes Sir Mix-A-Lot.

Sometimes I'll overlay a few mixes taken from recent Ski/Snowboard Videos...

Completely agree. There is enough time for me to listen to music while driving to work...
With all my respects, I don't understand why you need to be plugged in while enjoying the outdoors. It is understandable while running in the treadmill, or riding the trainer inside, but when I'm on the trails or road, I like to be completely aware of my surroundings.

    Gotta Have Tunes

In the mountains, I don't do Ipods.

Commuting in town, I always have them. Lately I have been bumpin some Aesop Rock. good ole hip hop. Before that, I was getting into Rebelution, good new reggae from santa barbara.

    Ah! Good theme here.

    Of The Mountains ...Dan Deacon
    Flying Through Canyons ...Grandaddy

...actually, any Grandaddy would probably be good mountain music. Not in the gonzo spaz kind of way, but in the trippy, hallucinogenic, beautiful, lush, nature-traipsing, oxygen-deprived, endorphin-saturated kind of way.

Dan Deacon on an unfocused mind may very well make the listeners head explode though.
