my god some of your lists are long...

I was going to be content with a tube, some quick co2 fills and a tire patch kit in my camel back...

it appears that it's just a tickle in what i should take along.

lynsetic compass will be my first purchase along with some nice maps for the areas i'm riding.

    - bike multitool
    - chain tool (some multitools have one)
    - tire levers and a patch kit
    - extra tube(s)
    - pump
    - digital tire pressure gauge
    - zip ties
    - electrical tape

All of this fits easily in my Camelbak.

The zip ties and electrical tape come in handy when things start falling off and you just need to get back to the car.

Don't worry about it and just ride with Brewmaster and if something happens use his stuff :). Actually Brewmaster has it covered, maybe a extra chain link and a small roll of duck tape.

This has been discussed previously so I'm sure the search function may yield more info.

For me, it depends if I'm riding back country trails or local rides where there's a good chance of help finding me.

Tire pump, spare tube, glue-on patch kit, tire boots, superglue, tire levers, multi tool with chain breaker, small section of spare SRAM chain, SRAM power link, Shimano chain pins (in case I can help someone out that runs Shimano chain), several tie wraps, cheapie combo whistle/compass, first aid kit, cig lighter, copy of my ID. Gels, food.

For backcountry I'd add in a space blanket, mirror or other type of signaling device, tp, jacket, extra food, possibly a small water filter.

I'm sure I've forgotten something but off the top of my head, I think that's what's in my pack.

EDIT: I forgot something very important - Spare derailleur hanger.

I forgot, I also carry a first aid kit, small pocket knife, food, wallet (cash, ID, medical insurance card), and a compass+bell combo on my handle bars.

I need to get some SRAM powerlinks.

Yeah, I've been looking to get a knife like Boats which I can mount on the shoulder strap of my pack for defensive purposes. I haven't been looking very hard though.

The pocket knife is more for the odd chance that I will need to repair something that requires cutting or something. I've not had to use it, but you never know.
