I have heard good things about mini air horns instead of whistles. They are MUCH louder. I am thinking about getting one for bears actually when I ride in their territory. Would probably work well for mtn lions too. They make small ones you can velcro to the shoulder strap of your camelbak.

I have my 11 year old son carry a whistle when we ride, just in case there's an emergency, I told him to blow it until help arrives. Not a bad idea.

wow, really, a shock pump? if your shock looses air, wouldn't the most likely cause be seals - and therefore non fixable? seems like a shock pump wouldn't help!?!

but whats happens if your shock is too stiff for the riding type
or maybe he accidentally hit the air thing
    its a good idea
most people could use one on a ride
my buddy varries his also and i find myself using it alot becuase i like changing my settings

    Other things I carry:

A small LED flashlight when I have to walk out in the dark. Lighter in case I get stuck out all night. Knife. Emergency blanket, of which I have given one away to someone on the trail with head injurys (in shock) waiting for medical help. Zip ties and duct tape. And most important toilet paper and or a handkerchief, got treid of riding out with one sock. Always a compass and on epic rides a water filter and GPS with extra batteries.

You know, it's amazing how much everybody carries and yet when I'm on patrol in Alsio Woods, I find that most people do not carry enough... like water (duh!), tire pump, tubes, etc. You'd expect this from newbies as we all did this when first learning to ride... but from grasshoppers that should know better??? I'm constantly amazed at how unprepared some riders are.

I have a load of goodies in my bag.

I carry One pump w/2-3 co2 quick fills, 1-2 tubes,3 tire levers,1- park multi tool with chain breaker,1 sram master link, 1 square of fine sand paper to stop people disc squeal, 1-shock pump 1- mini first aid kit. I also have a copy of my medical insurance card and my drivers lic. One credit card.$20.00 cash Spare car key sometimes.
1-presta adapter , 100 oz bladder, Cell phone and some time a My I pod and or camera. On long rides I carry food with me.

I think I am going to get some pepper spray it will work for all animals. I have seen a pepper spray that has a air horn on it. I need to find that again. That is perfect for mountain biking if it is small.

A snake bite kit would be smart also I'm looking for a good one.

In the early days 89-93 I had a little mini 25 auto I used to carry when I would go ride alone. Some of the trails at one time had crazy things going on. People used to get mugged or raped in the hills.

I think there are some other things that I have in my bag also I just can't think of them right now.

That would be the Spyderco Temperance and it's only a 5 1/4" blade. BTW I carry a printout of the current knife carry laws in my wallet, in case an over-zealous lawman stops me. (but theres none of THOSE in the OC, right  )

Ya needs 2 working arms to garrote someone, so no extra cable for me.

I don't just carry for me. I carry for me and the guy next to me. Call it a habit.
