For sure. Doc got me to start carrying that. I took his advice and just wrapped my tire levers with strips of duct tape.

I am all ears. There is nothing that I hate more than to have to hike-a-bike out because I failed to bring some simple tool or replacement part.

I often seem to carry a shock pump (yes, even when I'm riding a bike with coil suspension front and rear). Over the years, I've run into many people on the trails with air shocks that desperately need a shock pump.

Although not needed lately, I used to often carry spare suspension pivot bolts for frames that often had bolts that would loosen.

A $20 bill and a few quarters (for payphones) can buy you out of a lot of trouble as well, "Can you give me a ride back to my car? I have $20 for ya!" Or for those times where the group and the ride end up at a bar or restaurant.

That reminds me...It's a good idea to have contact information as well. Your riding buddies may know you, but may not know who to contact if you're in trouble. :-k

But one of the most important 'tools' needed for any pack is a camera!

I carry my camera too. You never know when the perfect pic oppotunity will pop up, or a buddy is in a perdicament that you will need visual proof of later.

What I am saying is, you can use a 26" tube in a 29" tire/rim, so you dont have to carry the 29er tubes, just use your 2 26" tubes for your spares for your 26er and 29er's.

    Ask and ye shall receive!

Let's see. This is just off the top of my head.

Comprehensive first aid kit including gauze, gloves, band aids of various sizes, pain killers, anti-inflammatories, aspirin in the event someone start having chest pains, tape, cloth to make a sling, antiseptic wash and ointment, bloodstoppers for the nasty wounds that need pressure to stop the bleeding and, finally, a SAM splint.
    Emergency blanket
    Rope
    Snake/Insect bite kit
Tecnu and Zenfal for Poison Oak/Ivy
    Shock pump
Combo CO2/hand pump with 5 spare cartridges
    Chemical hand/feet warmers
    Topeak Alien II multi tool
2 spare tubes (I run tubeless and have never needed them for myself)
Singulator in case of broken rear derailleur
    Emergency universal derailleur hanger
    SOG PowerLock multi tool
    Tube/Tire patch kits.
Assortment of spare nuts/bolts for cleats, chainrings, ISIS/square taper bottom brackets, brake rotor/caliper bolts
    Emergency universal spoke and nipples
    Windproof lighter
5 packs each of Gu gels and Power Bars
TP (both toilet and tissue with baggies to pack them out)
    Money (both coin and paper)
    ID and insurance card
    Cell phone
    Camera
Specialty tool for the new XTR cranks.
18mm cone wrench for the Singulator
Long handle 6mm and 8mm allen wrenches to remove my bolt on wheels and a 6" adjustable wrench.
    Whistle
    Spare car key
    Zip ties of different sizes
Master links for both 8 and 9 speed chains
    Spare 9 speed chain links
    Shimano chain pins
    Oh, and water

I think I've got everything. Those things are always in my pack. I may add an item here or there depending on the ride. The list might be missing a few things as I haven't taken inventory of my pack in a long time.

    :-k I think somewhere just north of 25lbs. with 3L of H20. :(

That's right! It's almost like having another bike on my back. Well it IS heavier than some of my bikes. I don't mean my road bikes either.

Wow and double Wow. That's a lot of stuff in the backpack. I actually have never ever ever liked caring a pack while riding. I don't know why...as I love buying backpacks...it took me a few years to give in and now I'm starting to eye saddle bags a bit more.

    I carry:
    spare tube or two
    tire levers
    water
    cell phone
    CO2 pump and two cartridges

That's it. Sometimes I'll throw in a clif bar ot granola bar but not very often. I usually can't ride for more than an hour or so and it's usualy in the hills behind my house. I've blown a tube and just walked home...I also blew a tire and turned my ride into a trail run (I wear trail runner shoes when i ride on flat pedals).

I just saw a guy on a road bike with what looked like all of Pato's stuff in the three pockets in his jersey earlier today!!! It was hilarious and looked really uncomfortable. #-o:lol:

Don't knock it till you try it. ;) It also plays a double role as my back protector in the event of one of my many many crashes.
