Bring a tube, Co2 or small pump, 1 water bottle. A 10-15 mile race is so short that even you got a flat, no way to make up the gap. No need for Camelbak.

Superlite tube and a Co2. New/beginner racers ALWAYS carry too much water. You should have done the bulk of your hydrating before the event. 12-16oz is enough for 1-1.5 hr effort in cool weather, adjust accordingly when it gets hot.

water and a gel. no tools or tubes. if i have mechanical problems then i have lost the race anyway, no need to carry extra stuff. unless, of coarse, the race is into remote areas (e.g., idyllwild) where it would be a long walk back.

Mr. Plow wins the prize! For a 10-15 mile race all you need is water and gel. Don;t ever ever line up at a race with a camelbak.

OK davidB wins the prize too = he's got to because we are on the same team, he's a pretty cool dude, and he wins all of his races hands down! Wouldn;t suggest the masterlink though. Adds way too much weight on your body when racing.

Weight on your back you can control for balance and traction. Weight on the bike just makes a heavier bike.

I used to rock a bottle and gel, and then one time, out of nowhere, my bars slipped mid way through a short race. Tightening the stem would have added 20 secs to my time, but would have sure beaten the "walk of shame" back to the staging area. So I would recommend a simple multi-tool as well.

ps, regarding the weight on your back vs weight on your frame comment: I simply don't agree. You can control both traction and balance, with you BODY, lol.

    (Everybody's different) :)

For geared (sitting) not much help but for singlespeed (standing) every pedal stroke counts. BTW with the weight on the back the legs can crank harder without pulling as much on the handlebar.

I HOLD my line thru the turns, CARRY my front wheel over step-ups, CART my butt up the hills, PACK the suspension thru stutters, BRING it to those I catch but most of all I HAUL ass when I can.

    That's what I carry during a race.

Every person I know who is fast...really fast, not internet forum fast, hates racing/riding with a Camelbak. I grudgingly wear one on my trail bike because it doesn't have a water bottle mount, weight on the body sucks for going fast up and down. Singlespeeding is the worst as it screws up your balance when standing wrenching on the bars.

I totally agree, my stronger friends are the reason I ditched the camelback. Riding without a pack took my xc skills to a whole new level.

A single 5mm allen for on-bike tweaks. Cause there's always something that 20 miles into 40, you wish you could just reach down and adjust or tighten.

and 1 small size waterbottle. ...full of a mix of espresso, whiskey and gunpowder. for that extra kick.

Aw C'mon You know you don't anything bigger than a 9mm (.380 would probably do) for taking out XC racers. Now SS'ers & Clydes, you're gonna want a .45ACP or perhaps a 12ga.

Yeah, tuck THAT in yer spandex....
