From past experience, how bad is the backup at the beginning of the race? How far until it thins out?

I have visions of tons of people in complete darkness without lights stuck in a traffic jam.

How much time does the backup add to overall times?

The first climb will take care of that for you and by the time you get to the top of Blackstar towers, it' fairly easy. But they also let people start early last year who we caught shortly after the towers

The guys out front usually knock out all the mud so the guys in the back have a pretty clear run through the muddy spots. Plus Blackstar is pretty wide for the first 1/2-3/4 mile before you get to the mud anyway. We have done a lot of work on the large mud hole at the beginning so it should be ridable.

By the time you get to the first switchback at the bottom of Blackstar....it should be pretty thinned out.

Thanks, can you come all the way out to Holy Jim? If so we will put you to work. When you get there ask for Robin.
You can also PM me if you have any questions.

I haven't been there. Will there be people heading to Holy Jim after the start?? If not, I need to get directions from the start.

From Blackstar, head back out to Santiago Cyn Rd and turn left. Go to Live Oak (Cooks Corner) and turn left again. Pass O'neil Park and when the road starts to veer to the right you will see a dirt road on the left. If you go up a hill, you went too far.
Turn left on that dirt road and go 5 miles to the HJ trailhead.
If you have your bike, it would be best to just park where the pavement ends and ride the 5 miles of dirt road on your bike instead of driving.

Chances are I will be hiding under a rock somewhere along the course. Waiting to capture those embarrassing moments.

What will you be wearing for VQ / CC ?

Im kind of torn this year as to what clothing I should wear for the race.

I was going to wear an under armor long sleve jersey with another fox jersey on top of that (short sleve)... then Maybe a thin jacket.

As far as shorts I was going to wear my fox shorts with leg warmers.

What are you guys wearing? Do you think 2 layers is enough?? ARG!!

    :-k

Probably gonna go under armor thing, semi-thin jacket (courtesy of von-diggs), long sleeve jersey, leg warms, and thick socks.

Thanks to Bret, I'm gonna switch gear at the bottom of motorway: short sleeve jersey, loose the leg warmers, regular socks.

At least I'm hoping it'll work out?

It is gonna be cold in the morning......but keep in mind that it will warm up quite a bit as the morning goes on. Weather says between 70-75.

Last year, it was 30 -35 degrees when we started. I wore:
    a pair of bib shorts
    kneewarmers
    Defeet undershirt shortsleeve
    short sleeve jersey
    armwarmers
    Descente vest
    regular cycling socks
    Descente Cold Out gloves
    Headsweat
    Nike Shoe Covers

I wore everything all day but the vest. The vest made it til the top of the first climb above Beek's Place. Really never got cold. Was nice to be able to pull the armwarmers down going up MapleSprings and up WestHorsethief.

Then again, if not for work......I would wear shorts 365 days a year.:-k

We rode it last Saturday at 5:30am. The temps look about the same as they were last week.

    Started with:
    -Wool Socks
    -Knee Warmers
    -Baggy Shorts
    -Arm Warmers
    -Long Sleeved shirt
    -Jacket
    -Thick Winter riding gloves

I removed the jacket a few mins after the blackstar climb started.

By the time I reached Beek's, I couldn't feel my toes. In all the night riding I've done (which is a lot) my toes haven't been cold like that. I actually took off my shoes and warmed my toes with my hands.

At bottom of Motorway, I swapped the thick gloves for fingerless, but left the knee & arm warmers on.

    My plan for race day:
-Wear the same as above, minus the jacket.
    -Wear Booties
-Possibly wear full leg warmers instead of knee warmers.

Good advice Andrew - Its meant to warm up by about 10degrees in relation to your start but I'm bringing the full leg warmers jsut incase! I'm undecided on the jacket or not at the start yet - will play that one by ear.
