Its a bit to tell you now but Sarah and I went up to Downieville 2wks before last years Hellride and did a full days riding there (think it was like 45miles+). It proved pretty valuable come Hellride day. Best of Luck Doug!

Last I heard, Doug was off to see family in SF, then up to Downieville to train for a week, acclimate to the elevation, learn some lines, climb, get practice fixing flats fast, get practice getting Stan'sed on the chin, getting practice going downhill fast, and getting practice ordering dinner before 6pm, when the town rolls up the carpet and the lights go out. Somewhere in there, I'm sure he's having fun too. Friday he gets hazed for extra bonus points.

Doug's strength will be grinding out hour upon hour of elevation and climbing, the downhills on a 64 year old man... conservative, there's no room for risk, mistakes, or helicopter trips out.

:read: Impy knows me for sure. :read:

I leisurely rode a few trails in the area as any tourist would. I rode up and down the Lavezolla creek area which was very pretty. Apparenty some trees escaped the miners' axes. There were trees with 8-foot thick trunks that had to be old growth and a larger species that resembled Sequoias (?).

Turns out that this was part of the return leg of lap 1. :?:

It was impossible to capture the big trees in pictures as they were huge shadows behind a screen of smaller trees (which are themselves too tall to capture).
