UST tire recommendation for the OC area trails

I just went up from 2.1 to 2.3 in the front and I like the feel. It is much more stable when cornering. I left 2.1 on the rear and I think it is fine. You would probably be fine with 1.9 in the back, at least until it wears out.

 

now the decision of what fronts to get

 

I like and dislike the Blue Groove 2.1 UST I have in the front. I like it because the groove pattern really helps you stay in the corners and hold the line very well. I dislike it because it feels like if you really start to bank high in the corners once you get too far on the sidewall of the tire it feels like its going to roll over. Its kinda like there is a point on the tire where its make it or break it if you will.

On another note, I blew my first hole on the loop last week in the front with stans. The stans fluid was pissing all over me and the bike as I came to a stop. I found the hole as it stopped pissing out a stream and started bubbling up. I whipped the dirt off and it seems to stop and seal. I pumped the tire back up and finished the 2nd lap with no problems. Stans proved to work for me!

no to thread jack or anything, but can you get pinch flats running tubeless? Can the tire get pinched?

 

if you run the pressure low enough i guess you could...

 

Mostly the tires just "burp". Sounds like it looks, but then you've got a glob of stans all over the trail

so now i have friends telling me that "you should never run UST in the front" i think it's based on fears that the front could potentially go flat in the front and you would be in a world of hurt.

I've been riding my UST front and rear and havent had problems *knock wood* but now i'm cornfused.

 

You know..a tubed front tire can potentially go flat too...

 

that's exactly my argument...i think they're paranoid of catastrophic blow out? I dunno

 

That sounds far fetched to me.

 

I've been running on a Velociraptor up front and a Serfas Vermin in the rear for about a year. In that time I've had NO flats on the Vermin; that tire is bullet-proof.

Plus, you get the added bonus of EVERY single rider you meet questioning your sanity for running a 1.9 that looks damn near slick. But if you have the quadraceptional fortitude to stay seated during a climb, you'll be fine in 95% of the trails you hit in OC. They've never done me wrong.

If you can stand the heckles and the laughing behind your back, you're good to go.

 

i've had a tube explode in the middle of the rock garden on Rock-It and then the tire rolled off the rim and i had a nice crash... it can and does happen

KonaDupee, you can rationalize it all you want, but I'm still gonna heckle you for that hoopty rear tire, especially after I gave you a better one!

So, went out to Carbon Canyon yesterday morning with that friend of ours (you know...the guy with the thing for that other guy, fuggitaboutit). We ran through a mine field of thorns & burs (no bushes oddly, just thorns strewn about).

Out of our 4 combined tires, can you guess which one did not go flat, despite pulling AT LEAST 20 thorns out of it? Uh huh.

They've never done me wrong!

 

That was my point, a tube could explode just as easily as a tubeless set up.

 

Well, sure, but no matter what tire you fill to 38psi with Slime you'd still get the same result, and others actually come with TREAD!

 

well did a search and destroy mission today at the path during lunch and scored my front tire. nevegal 2.1 ust. it was between that and the maxxiss high rollers...since i got a lot of feedback on the neve's i thought i cant go wrong. was tempted to pickup the kenda small blocks too for the rear so we'll wait and see.
