1. OPEN PRACTICE THIS SUNDAY (MAY 21ST) FOR THE ROCK AND ROAD / SHO-AIR / SPECIALZED 24-HOURS OF ORANGE COUNTY SUNDAY The 24-Hour Course will be open for practice next Sunday, (May 21st) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be a $5.00 charge per car to enter the Flying B Ranch. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE REGISTERED IN THE 24-HOUR EVENT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PRACTICE SESSIONS. Our next practice will be held on Saturday, May 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. The course is about 6.3 miles long with 1,342 feet of total elevation gain per lap. In the coming weeks Doug at Geoladders will be posting a walk through of the course, as well as a satellite picture of the course on the Geoladders web site. We estimate it will take expert riders around 35 to 40 minutes (when fresh) to complete a lap. We already completed one new short single track for the event and will be building another along with a bridge over the creek on the back side of the course. If you would like to assist in their building we will be having trail build days from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. (with dinner provided afterward) on: Tuesday, May 16th Thursday, May 18th Those volunteering will participate in our volunteer event in December and be allowed access to pre-ride the 24-Hour course during private practice sessions held during the week. If you are interested in helping out contact Jason Martin at: [email protected] 2. 24-HOURS OF ORANGE COUNTY UPDATE - ACTIVITIES DURING THE EVENT We’ve received a few emails asking for additional information on the activities we have planned during the event and if we will have age and class overall Orange County Champions for the novice and intermediate classes. First the activities: Saturday afternoon and evening we will have the Rock N Road bike toss competition and the Sho-Air horse shoe tournament with prizes donated by our sponsors. At 8:00 p.m. the tunes will be playing and we will have several fires going on in the staging area with a no host (which means you do your own cooking) “weenie roast” with all the fixin’s provided by the Warrior’s Society (hot dogs, mustard catsup, cheese, chili, mustard, onions, relish, drinks and chips provided) for participants of the event; we provide the food and you cook it. Please let us know if you prefer vegetarian “dogs.” Eating/cooking times for solo riders (and support person), 2 man teams (and support person), 5 person teams and corporate teams for the no host “weenie roast” will be given out at registration time. All participants (and one support person for the solo riders and two person teams), will receive two meal tickets for the self hosted Saturday night “weenie roast” and Sunday “pancake breakfast”. Additional meal tickets for the “weenie roast” and “pancake breakfast” can be purchased in advance at registration for a donation of $5.00 for ages 13 and above and $3.00 for ages 12 and under. If you are participating in the Rock N Road / Sho-Air / Specialized 24-Hours of Orange County (and the Orange County Championship Series) as a solo rider in the expert, intermediate or novice class - and cannot continue riding for the full 24-hours of the event - you WILL NOT receive a DNF as long as you do a minimum of 6 laps. We fully expect some of the solo riders to stop riding at times during the race to regroup and get rest - or just get worn out and stop. What ever laps you do after the minimum will count towards the Championship Series in your age group and class. Some novices participating in the Championship Series plan to put in as many laps as they can then sleep, get up, and continue. We realize that a novice (for that matter many intermediates and some experts) competing solo in the event may not be on the course non-stop and will need to take some extended breaks. We cannot promise that you will win, but we can promise that you’ll have fun trying. For someone testing the waters of riding solo or participating in a 24-hour event we want your experience to be challenging and fun - not intimidating. We will also have a charging tent station provided by Nightrider at the event and a first aid booth provided by Clif Bar. The event is limited to 300 participants. Registration closes June 1, 2006 11:59 PM Pacific Time or when the event sells out. The registration fee is $85.00. The entry fee includes an event t-shirt, raffle prizes and lunch. The age groups are: 16 and under, 17 to 30, 31 to 45, 46 and up (Special recognition to be given to the oldest rider) If there are not more than 3 riders or teams registered in any single age grouping for a specific event the rider(s) will get moved up to the next age grouping. Also, those who are racing.....Niterider has provided us with a small charging station for 6 & 13 volt systems. Those of you that are running other light systems, it would be a good idea to bring your wall chargers along. We will have power strips for you to plug into. This is probably a good idea for all racers, using Niterider or not. That way if the charging station is full, you can still plug in. There will be someone manning the charging station, you will check your batteries in and out. The person working the station will be the only one allowed to distribute the batteries. This is will help with the problem that some people have with thier batteries walking off. mtnbikej
Duathlon I noticed when I was driving down Santiago Canyon Road after the practice today, there was a Caltrans warning sign saying that a duathlon was happening on 6/3 and I think it may have mentioned road closures but I was already past the sign before I could read it completely. Did anyone else catch this? C
They will not be closing the road. Those are not Caltrans signs. OCTRI.com put them up. However, the county will not allow them to close the road.8) Do not worry. mtnbikej
