We (Allison, Justin, Dan & I) awoke Super early to drive up to Hurkey Creek for the Idyllwild Spring Challenge Super D race. The boys were going to duke it out, with at least 8 other competitors, for the illustrious title of Super D champion but..... We arrived at the Hurkey campground by 7:30 and there was virtually nobody there. Strange:-k. After speaking with a few volunteers, we got the scoop...the race director went to the hospital last night (we heard dehydration but that's through the grapevine) so the race was off. We hope she is ok! Anyhow, the boys were bummed out. They had been pumping themselves and each other up about the race all weekend, and were ready to take each other on. We decided to stop by and say hello to our friends Heidi and Mike (Heidi is mp3's teammate and racing partner). After a bit of discussion, we decided on a new plan...we were all in a silly mood and figured we'd all ride up to the start of the Super D and since it was still marked, the boys would "race" down the course and see who finished first. Meanwhile, the girls would take pictures along the way, each at a different locale. First boy to the bottom would be the winner, complete with pinecone and personal grooming product prizes (plus bragging rights). The contestants...don't be too intimidated: Dan "the Pacifist" Mc. Justin "the Mannimal" M. Michael "Scary Beard" D. Pine cone prizes I wasn't looking forward to climbing up Keen Camp again, but :?: it wasn't as bad today. I felt pretty good and my lungs weren't hurting as much. The ride was still beautiful, and I enjoyed it much more today. A & J climbing Keen Camp Wow...that's really big! It was fun to hit the trails again and just enjoy what Hurkey has to offer. We truly made lemonade out of lemons! (and then, went off to Vail for double sessions!)
If I knew you guys were racing for pine cones, I would've been game. (I was the guy camped next to Mike with the weimaraner.)
Oh man...didn't even realize you were an STR member!!! Great to meet ya! I'm sure we can arrange another race next time around
Yeah, I'm trying to gain weight! Nah...PB, B, & J = peanut butter, banana, and jelly It was so good...try it sometime!
I think this is just hilarious. Glad you guys had a good time, I have been dying to get back to Hurkey since the STR camping trip. Later.
Steph did most of the explanation, so now onto my photos - Vader's dog! My other other green bike Me slowing everyone down up Keen Camp climb Heading toward Recovery Heidi Steph marks the trail so everyone knows to turn right My finish line Justin coming in Justin wins, before turning the wrong way near the boys' finish line Michael Don's Bikes Dan Congrats to all participants! It actually is pretty sad that the race was cancelled. IMO it was a great course, and I think the event would've been pretty successful to the point that it could've been a bigger Super D race next year. There was *very* little ascent, and a lot of fun techy sections.
Hey Stephanie, I called Nancy to try to relay the message to you.. we were on our way up too and found out it was cancelled. Steve and his friend Paul, built the shuttle stands for the bikes so we met at the park anyways and shuttled about 15 riders to the top. We were going to Start at top of Southridge but the gates were closed on account of the fires. So, first run we did the Super D course. Then we were dropped at E. Maxwell Scenic trail and rode down.. Bummer we missed you! It was a fun day of shuttling. See you soon,
