i was there this morning with pete, we did the sycamore canyon trail (over by the helipad), and came up and out thru the back side where the NIKE site is, great ride: super tight switchbacks and tons of climbing. we also saw a very large deer (biggest i ever seen) down in the canyon. 12.9 miles total
there is a NIKE site off mulholland in the santa monicas, and another one over here off skyline trail north of the 7th street loop in the turnbull canyon area, it's not as impressive as the one over by you, Alex, so you're not missing much.
NIKE? As in shoes? Ride at turnbull with alan was good times btw. Somewhat overgrown over in worsham but very obvious that bikers and hikers go through there cause the grass is matted down all along the trail.
NIKE missiles used to be used to defend the west coast from bombers back in the 50's to early 60's. the development of ICBM's (intercontinental balistic missiles) made the NIKE missiles obsolete, so the various locations on the west coast were dismantled. here are the locations of various NIKE missile sites in california: http://ed-thelen.org/loc-c.html#California
