Ok I guess my question is what is a beginner? When I saw beginner i dont mean never rode much or at all. I mean someone still getting their feet wet but have been riding some and want to continue too.

Everyone's opinion of a beginner will be different as is everyone's opinion of a difficult hill climb. Personally, I would consider a beginner is anyone who is anywhere from first time on a bike without training wheels to someone who's just getting comfortable with the all of the basics. For example, someone who is just getting comfortable coming down Matthis without sliding their rear tire all the way down.

When I say all of the basics I mean shifting gears, climbing, descending, proper braking and basic body positioning to match the terrain. I'm not saying they should be a master of these skills or even proficient in them. I just mean they should be comfortable enough with them to ride on a fireroad with a slight incline/decline. That is my definition of a beginner.

I say think Dino when you ask yourself what is a true beginner. ;)

turnbull is NOT beginner friendly, IMHO.

steep climbs. steep decents. twisty singletrack with ruts. switchbacks. studder bumps in all the "good" places.

and, large a large wash out on a popular singletrack.

there isn't extreme exposure....but i think a beginner will feel overwhelmed.

    Recipe for disaster:

    1. Recovering from significant injury? Check!
    2. Gained weight due to said injury? Check!
    3. Cardio shot all to hell BEFORE injury? Check!
    4. Recent significant maintenance on bike never attempted before? Check!
    5. Rear tire in need of replacement, but too poor to replace it? Check!
    6. Several friends on ride with cameras and no fear posting FAIL pics on the internet? Check!

    Can't wait. :bang:

Wait a minute, i dont see Dino Brown in the Yes RSVP. I think we all need to call him to this ride.
Unless he is planning on an unannounced grand appearance :-k

    You're an animal.

I'm more than likely going to start with the group on the Whittier side. If I do start out from Orangegrove, I'm going to go slow, enjoy the day and hunt down the pack.

    OWWWOOOOOoooooooooo....

What size and type do you need? I can meet you there early with one so you'll have something for the ride.

Sounds like fun. We ride that combination often. A word of advise is that at the end of A-side there was a landslide so you have to stop & go around. Is right at the end. As of last tuesday night this has not been repaired! LARGE missing part of trail can't miss it but it would be a surprise if you are not ready! What time is every meeting? SS will be a personal choice our friend has done it.

The sidewalls on my Spec 2Bliss Eskars are wearing thin. I'm seeing Stan's in places I don't think there should be. It should be fine. I always carry a tube anyways.

    Thanks for the offer.

Speaking of Chumba & Big Bikes....

I work for Chumba and ride big bikes (DH) along with a bunch of friends that call Turnbull home (we live really close) and usually go there to test setups and get some seat time in during the week. Sooo if anyone wants to ride Turnbull on a big bike during this event come on out and hitch a ride up with us we should be shuttling all day long unless we decide to shoot over to Webbster at some point but we will be starting at the Bull 3 B's to A Side till you throw up! :bang:

*As for the landslide on A-Side there is a booter over the landslide and a girlfriend line as well so no problem there. Is the Bull for beginners rated "R" or "PG" well anyone that has good brakes and knows how to use them can ride it but yes if you go too fast aka past your riding abilities then YES the trail will bite back!

    any takers?

    UPDATE!!!!

The ride will now be starting at 9:30am. The goal is to be rolling out by 9:30 with this many people. Please do not arrive at 9:30.

Also, since we are parking on the street in front of various houses (think Aliso but worse), common courtesy Saturday morning is a must. We will mostly likely come across a hiker or two, it goes without saying that you may need to warn any riders behind you of a hiker coming up.

We will be in one group, as this is not a newbie ride. We will probably be moving at a decent pace until we regroup. There are plenty of chances to head back to your car if the ride is turning out to be too hard for you as well.

I'm in the process of updating the original post and PM'ing everyone on the RSVP list so everyone knows of the later start. There are plenty of people that have never been, don't know where they're going, driving a bit to get there, or will probably be running late.

If you are one of those people and might think you'll have a problem Saturday morning, let me know and i'll PM you my phone # and we'll wait up for you if you call.

    Nine Thirty! new start time!
