Yeah but you do get, that if they are coming from the ad network *your* servers have nothing to do with it, the ads come directly from the 3rd party servers to the browser, never passing through your servers...not that adding ClamAV is a bad thing.

My brother-in-law's IT guy says they are getting slammed lately with all these bugs coming through. Most are easy fixes but he's working 18 hour days right now.

Yesterday morning, I had a problem not being able to open Internet Explorer. I don't know what caused it. A friend helped me fix the problem by going to "tools", finding the "add-ons" and disabling certain ones that didn't seem identifiable or necessary. I'm not saying this is the same thing you have, but it is possible.

(AND i did update my virus software after the restore)

***THEN*** make sure you have *very* good AntiVirus... I know...I know...Lots of opinions here and here is mine take it for what it is worth...I will tell you the folks that I know that run either Nod32 or Kaspersky...we pretty much have zero problems...period!

Sure it costs a few $$$ but then again I am not spending time and energy cleaning viruses out of my computer. I just spend time and energy cleaning them out of other people's computers.

Also I highly recommend using FireFox with adblock plus add on, that way you are blocking the ads in the first place. (Sorry I know this is ad driven site...but right now the ad world is a bit dangerous)

Also make sure you are doing your windows updates regularly / auto.

make sure you go update your java to the latest version. my desktop had the latest version and it stopped it right there before microsoft security essentials stopped it. on my laptops, i mustve had older versions.

    Virus detected...

*I sent someone a STR link at 1:45pm
    *They opened the link
    *Security software IMMEDIATELY kicked-in
    *Computer was scanned for virus
    *Virus was found and removed
    (Sorry... No screen shot)

The email was sent to a work computer
    1. Is it possible the virus could effect other work computers?
    (even though it was removed)

    2. Will the IT department know if a virus was found on their work computer?
(i.e. why are you reading mail and not working)

Whoever did this... Not cool! :(

Ironically, that is exactly how some viruses are reborn. They stick themselves in reg keys and system restore locations, then when you remove the virus and reboot, they invoke and re-launch through restore and you're back where you started. It can be your friend or worse enemy. If you know how to remove items on startup, there's usually suspect entries in there as well. As Fred mentioned earlier, MalwareBytes is great and so is Search & Destroy.

Anyone in IT know the answer???? If my AV at work catches this, will this alert the IT people and have them look at my web practices (ie see how much time I actually spend on STR????)????

    Thanks!

There isnt a simple answer it all depends on how they manage there network. Some just let the SV do its job and dont manage it or check the results from each computer, some have AV setup to report everything and they go through every detail of the report. Most likely if they are at that level they would already see how much time is spent on the web as they would likely already be tracking that through other means.

    Not sure if this helps...

*A second STR member informed me of a virus-related issue yesterday!

*Paraphrasing what the IT guy told them:
"He called it an AV virus. He found both the executable and the registry keys in the registry."
