Fully rigid old school 1990 mountain bike on a tough trail may well give you a glow of satisfaction to clean but you'll be beaten to a pulp and wont be able to ride as far or as fast.

I'll get my kicks with my level of skill from a bit more speed and being out there a bit longer thanks.

I miss V brakes and am wondering if I am stuck (forced) to buy disc when I get my new bike!
This summer in Durango, in a rainstorm in the backcountry on the Colorado trail, both front and rear disc brakes died. The guys couldn't even jimmy them to work a little bit! It sucked huge! It was a great section of moderate dh that I had to Flintstone brake on to get out without killing myself! And I miss tossing my wheel in the back. Disc's are one more thing to worry about bending, breaking, bleeding blablabla. No wonder some of you go rigid and simple!

But grasshopper, just think how much fun you'll have making it your own... of course that costs $$$!

BTW: I used to laugh at the single speeders... thought if God had wanted us to ride single speeds, he wouldn't have allowed gears to be invented... then I started riding one... a 29er no less... and found that I really enjoyed it... then I really became a believer in "each to his own"

    Strange post

This is a strange post because it doesn't seem to result in much more than, "Yeah, what you said, man!" or "Oh, that's foolish, blah blah blah. I like discs and suspension. Mind your own business, etc."

You know what trend I want to rant about? Lame posts and busy bodies that worry about what other people are doing on their bike. Oh, and did I mention Primal Wear? I wish it was a trend so it would eventually die.

Excuse me now. I need to pound a Monster, watch New World Disorder, and then go ruin one of my local trails by building ladder bridges and doing skids...using my disc brakes and full suspension with a bigger tire in the front.

Yes, back when I was a youngster we all road 6" wheels on our unicycles uphill to the school house and uphill home, i.e., no one could shuttle anything because our land of far far away was always increasing in elevation. But consistent with your sentiments, I don't see the "need" for a gearbox with infinite combos but it doesn't bother me either, LOL!

Don't forget to use that generator on your tires for your light--that's the way real men see at night!

    That's great!

But this aint about a bike, or rider preferance......

It's about the MBIC and the fact I'm now looking forward to hording parts that normally would be readilly available, were light, strong and not so damn expensive!

Fat bars, short stems and discs? Bah, Humbug!

Oh well- guess I'll just lay down and the the 'wave' roll over me. What's a retro-grouch (2wheelLee saying ) ta do.

Thank God for Easton and Avid!

    Weeeeeeeeee!

    :)

Yes this is awesome. I have an 8 speed v-brake 80 mm travel HT weighing in at 22lbs. I haven't found a trail I haven't been able to do. I haven't riddin rock-it yet but I'm looking forward to it. I rode it on a 5 inch bike, it looked like my HT could handle it. Although I don't agree with the short stem. The bike is much easier to handle with a shorter stem and easier to climb. I was doing wheelies up hills till I shortened my stem to a 100mm

My mate has a custom steel bike (guess by who), same set up. #24, 20" frame.

Also has Trek Fuel, approx the same weight- something like 4g's$ plus, and he hates it. Total sit up, straight-line bike. Handles like a dead carp on a stick .

Hey MBIC- stop re-inevnting the wheel already! Some of us still like our bikes like, um, well-...... bikes!

    :)

on oversized bars i believe that the larger diameter affords a thinner wall to make them lighter and stiffer. Another new tech that is cool is tubeless tires. better traction and softer ride.

    I heard

the larger bars were due wanting the stems to be the same as road bars:?:

I've never handled a dead carp on a stick, but I bet it's easy to throw around!

Trends that I wish would die

    • Shuttling CC trails (see San Juan).
    • Bells and handlebars while wearing your Ipod.
    • Using your bell on a night ride.
    • Wearing m-bike clothing anywhere in public besides on the trail.
    • Leg shaving.
    • Adults riding 26” wheeled m-bikes.
    • Any other sock color except BLACK.
    • Any other sus fork color except BLACK.
    • 9 speed drive train. Bring back 8 speed!!
    • 20mm forks on CC bikes.
    • Leg shaving (listed twice for a reason);)
