Im heading to Los Angeles this weekend for a friends birthday and figured I'de ride somewhere new. Turnbull is the only place i ever rode in LA (aside from Sycamore Pt Mugu). What trails are close to Korea Town? Are most trails closed? Any info will help, thanks STR!!:bang:
LA parks are closed to riders. The STR rules will not allow me nor my friend named Sullivan to disclose areas close to the west side that could be passable during inclements of bad weather. Sulli as I call him lives about 20 minutes from Korea town just past the 405 by Mandeville canyon. He used to be good friends with Will Rogers and he used to loop around via a Farmers road and come back down by Will's place. It would take him a good 2 hours to loop around, and he would end up climbing 1900 to 2100 feet by the time he got back home. Some days he would double back and make it twice as nice, but that was before Sulli's wife neutered his backyard and took out all the fun air.
General rule is that trails in The National Forest are not closed due to wet conditions, although State, County and City Parks seem to close to due weather. Use common sense as to if you are causing trail damage to trails that are not closed and respect the closures. I do not believe STR has a policy about talking about riding legal trails just the sensitive non system trail that are not on the maps, but there again some people are just not happy unless they are poking at the moderators. http://www.venturacountytrails.org/TrailMaps/Backbone-Reseda/AreaTrails.htm. Up 10 across 3, down 5. These are good rock trails that do not get damaged during the winter season. I believe the trails to the east (towards Korea town) are all part of the city of Los Angeles. The city has a no bike policy on parkland dirt trails, so places like Franklin canyon, Griffith park, Chavez Ravine are not legal. Sullivan Canyon, Farmers Road, and Rogers Road are part of the SMMNRA and are open and rideable because of the rocky base. Westridge and Sullivan Ridge are possible but are not really a good choices because they are graded fire roads and you will leave tracks and ruts. We do not like riders rutting our trails, the ruts will last all year (see the Cheesboro photos). This is a fun loop and can be ridden both ways.
Sullivan canyon was an awesome trail with unlimited air. The So Cal gas company graded the canyon last summer so now it is a wide rocky road with lots of water crossings.
