Don't know Peter Frohmader, but am a fan of Glass'. He and his family actually stopped in at L.A. Gear on Melrose in 1984 when I was the Asst. Manager there. He was a bit freaked out that I actually knew who he was. He found it unsettling. I told him I really liked his LP Northstar. I don't think he knew what to say to me... Ha!

    Tell me about Frohmader.

How cool, meeting Philip Glass! His best 2 LPs are 'Music With Changing Parts' (1971) and 'Music In Similar Motion' (1973) -do you know them?-... both were released on his own Chatham Square label. I like 'systemic' music such as early Glass. At first listen it sounds repetitive, but upon close scrutiny it's actually quite complex... changing constantly. An unusual variation on Glass is Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company... systemic music done on Moogs.

Frohmader's work is unusual, you might call it dark prog.
There are some 'zeuhl' elements ala Magma, a bit of Amon Duul II, much electronics, and on his first LP ('Nekropolis: Musik aus dem Schattenreich' 1981) an orchestra of bass guitars. He's released a number of LPs and CDs over the years. A few years ago, he did a collaboration with Richard Pinhas (Heldon).

Never heard the term 'systemic.' His work was always called 'minimalist.' I don't know the recors you poiint out, but I will have to give them a listen.

I was both a Magma fan as well as an Amon Duul II fan (along with Bruford, Hatfield and The North, Caravan, Gong, Soft Machine, Matching Mole, etc. -- all the loony Brit stuff -- funny aside: "soft machine" in French is machine mol, or pronounced more like a Limey: Matching Mole). Christian Vander, the drummer/leader of Magma invented a freakin' language that all his work was sung in. Man, the '70s were weird, but I could go n about prof rock for hours and hours.

I'll have to locate some Peter Frohmader...

Not in any order. But all important.

I'm Confused by all the Fear talk. They were one of those bands that was a staple in an punks album collection. Itwas generaly one of the first I'm punk rockernow purchases most kids made, along with stealing some safety pins to put on your denim jacket.
Personaly they were a total farce. Lee did his best work after taking on odd acting roles as strip club owners and thugs, much closer to his real life than the band ever was.

Yeah, the term 'systemic' is a variation on Minimalist... for musical variations that are more mathematical. Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Piero Milesi are often refered to as 'systemic'. Terry Riley and La Monte Young are what come to mind when i'm thinking 'minimalist'.

That would be 'Kobaia'... Magma were incredible. Have you heard 'Weidorje' (Magma offshoot by Bernard Paganotti)? The Canterbury stuff is great... Caravan's 'In the Land of the Gray and Pink' is a f-ing classic LP!
For Frohmader, try to find the one I mentioned, 'Ritual', or either of the 'Homunculus' LPs.

I'd like to see you tell him that! He would bop ya!

I had many of conversations with Lee Ving during the early 80's...I also saw Fear play countless gigs. Maybe the fans of the band Fear were a farce? I can tell you this from personal experience, he is the real deal.

Sure, Fear got a bad rap with all of their agro (neo nazi) fans, but the band was no joke whatsoever. I guess that I just have a different opinion? :?:

    Primus deserves a mention here.

Also Chrome... great obscure late-70s group from the Bay Area. They are what you get by crossing The Stooges with the novel (or movie) 'A Clockwork Orange'.

"Ever feel like you've been cheated?"

    Johnny Rotten

    Right from the horse's mouth.

This sums up my opinion of the Sex Pistols. Talk about a farce! They were (literally) a joke. The Clash were the real deal, The Sex Pistols were a sham from the beginning!

Thanks Simon! These days I listen to metal, Drum and bass and collect 60's beautiful music (jazz based pop) so I guess I'm wacked, its hell on people in my car unless they have no limits...

I always thought Blue cheer was radical for 68, and possibly the first metal band, some people say Iron butterfly, some say Ozzy, but still rad for 68!:bang:
