    Lesson #1 in mtbing....

If your going to ride alone, don't forget your cell phone.

I went back to some local trails that Lynn and I rode a couple days before. I had just finished the back loop and was getting started on another loop towards the front of the park. There's a wooden bridge abt 2.5ft. wide that gets a little slippery when there's fog. It goes over a small ravine with some cactus and a few boulders. I felt my front tire start to slip so I unclipped to dab and dabbed into thin air. Down I went. I could tell right away that my left arm/ shoulder was broken among other things.

After laying there for about 5 mins. and realizing I forgot my cell phone I managed to pull myself and my bike out of the ravine. I pushed my bike about 1/2 mile to the entrance of the park where a fellow mtber put my bike in his truck and drove me to the ER. We called Bruce on the way so he was waiting there when we pulled in.

I don't know yet how long I'll be off the bike. I dislocated and fractured my shoulder as well as some facial lacerations, bumps, bruises, the usual. The bike is fine though. :)

Thanks for the well wishes and tons of thanks to Gary, the fellow mtber who helped me out.

I finally got my ass off the couch and checked over the bike. She's fine. No scratches, dents or dings. Damn, that would have been the perfect opportunity for a new bike though.

Wine tasting only takes one arm, right???:?:

Be glad your bike is fine.
If your hospital bills are anything like mine, there won't be alot of extra cash laying around in the coming months.

Surgery alone was $58,000 billed to insurance. You think titanium is expensive on your bike, try putting in your arm!

I'm glad your spirits are up and you are in one piece.
Just focus on how much worse it could have been.

    Attention injured grasshopper Shannon

You are much, too much a beautiful female grasshopper to be doing things like this to your body... stop that this instant. The bad new: lots of pain and no bike riding for a while (you'll be missed by the Tribe) The good news: this too shall pass!

Thanks OMR and everyone else. Today seems worse than yesterday. I guess all the pain medication is wearing off. I'm looking forward to seeing the ortho doc. tomorrow so I can at least get an idea of what to expect. I think that would help ease my mind quite a bit at this point.

I just saw the ortho doc. He said I had a severe dislocation and completely broke off a small bone that helps hold the joint in place. Thats what is causing all the pain. I have to wear a sling and wrap for the next 3 weeks until I see him again. Then they'll do more x-rays and an MRI. It's hopeful I won't need surgery, so far so good. I should only be off the bike 6-8 weeks. Another bummer, the itching I kept feeling under my sling is poison oak. Can it get any worse??? At least some good news... when you get to be my age, the likely hood of dislocating my shoulder again is only about 10 - 20%. When you're in your 20's I guess the percentage goes up significantly.
Thanks for the well wishes. Can't wait to be riding again. I'm trying to stay positive that I'll still be able to do the Counting Coup.

(Here's my dislocated shoulder. The ball looking thingy is supposed to be much farther to the right)

Oh great! FEDEX just showed up with my new bike gear bag. Talk about torture...

Oh, man, what a bummer - I'm so sorry to hear this but I'm glad you're ok considering what you ended up with. Take care and remember, wine and pain killers...well, nevermind :)
