I'm also new to SS world and I'm currently setup to 32-20. I tried the 32-18 and I'm having a tough time on climbs.

I ride with a 32X21 on my Bianchi 29er ss. You spin out alittle bit on the flats, and pushes you on the climbs.

I am a SS beginner too.
    (Highly recommending the 2012 Hydro-Alum. Niner One9)

I noticed that recovery time is longer...
usually I can't feel any muscle soreness after riding my Geared bike.
But after riding my SS on some steep trails it takes 2-3 days for the (dull) muscle pain to go away.
Usually 8-10 milesloop with 1500-2000 ft climbs.
Pretty demanding on the leg muscles and Lungs/Heart systems.
Reminding me of when I just started geared biking, hopefully in a couple of months I will be even fitter.

well this one is geared at 32:16 which is probably a bit too steep for me.

im sure ill still use my geared ride for stuff like turnbull and marshall... right?

That's what I'm doing now while I build up more climbing strength.

32-18 for me on my 26er, had it from the beginning. On the flats I wish I had a 16 but on the climbs 18 feels good

so did a test run on the fully loop last night. i was able to do most of the ride without walking, but there were a few trouble spots.

1 - got a few strokes away from clearing the hill at the end of hiltscher.
2 - can only get half way up the steep start of nora. i can mash up the rest, but those first few yards are just killer.
3 - can only get about half way up the extra credit at the dam.

but riding that SS is pretty rad. my body just feels more in tune with the bike. maybe its because i dont have to think about shifting, just riding.

    must. get. stronger.

If you get a little kinder gear ratio you'll be able to ride it on everything. It gets easier!

not sure how strong you are, but i'm pretty sure i couldn't climb marshall on my 32-18 without a lot of HAB

    That kinda depends on you!

I'm old and of mediocre ability, but 32-20 on my Tranny (26er) gets me up Willow, San Juan, and Noble with no problem.
