I was going nuts trying to find a flat-faced 26mm socket for my Fox Float air-chamber cap. I did find one from BikeToolsEtc.com but also came upon this cool wrench: http://lunarbikes.com/tools.htm Lunar is a division of the guys' main company A-tech Fabrication. There's a thread on MTBR dating back to 2008 when he (TacoMan) first made them and there was only one size--now they come in all the popular sizes. I just ordered a 26mm. EDIT: I didn't buy the 26mm flat socket from BTE because they add on extra $ it you don't have a $20 minimum. I didn't really need any extra items so I passed. If I had a grinder, I would've bought a regular socket somewhere and faced it myself.
I almost bought a set too. I read that the cone wrench spanners might work pretty well also? Either way, I'm going to take a grinder to flatten out a socket to see how well it works before dropping the moneys.
I actually own one of these in the 26mm. It is elegantly simple and works exactly as it is designed to. I only wish the size and brand was written or etched into the handle, I wanted to recommend this to someone once but couldn't remember who made it. Of course, this is something that I could fix with a Sharpie. Alan
Irv, I can grind the socket down for you. I have surface grinders at the shop, so it would be perfectly flat. Just got to figure a way to get it to me.
Finally used mine. Got the whole set and am very happy. Makes a helluva difference. Cuts a few minutes off disassembling and reassembling the top caps. Now how do I attach this to my electric driver? Thanks Fong! edit: The pic below is of some guy's compression damper. He came saying he lost travel, getting about 5 inches, and also the fork clunks on compression. He blew the bottom cap off his Boxxer's motion control and broke the tip off the compression valve stem. HTH does that happen?
Right on. Many of my box wrenches have been ground. Sockets, I like to turn them on the lathe because it's easier to keep them perfectly cylindrical. If anyone needs a hand with turning the sockets, it takes only a matter of minutes. Bring them by or find a way to get them to me.
You got it, Irv. If you feel like venturing north to bring them over, I can knock 'em out in about two minutes apiece.
Very nice but only down side is that you can't put a torque wrench to them. Most auto store have 24mm sockets for the fork caps and use a torque wrench if you got one.
