Can't make it Sunday after all--apparently I've had plans for weeks...:?: Will have to catch up with y'all next time. Anxious to try this trail though, might shoot for Thursday instead. Is the loop at the top well marked/obvious?
i, hopefully, can make it. if i do go, i doubt i can make it by 8:30. i dont even know where san juan is. if i can get a good set of directions, it may help, map too . and as for it being JamR going...i dont know if i can keep up! man that guy is a BEAST!
Jam R, can you give me directions to the trailhead, or where i can meet up with you and the others? thanx, i'd apppreciate it
How bout saturday? Ill be out there Saturday. So if anyone cant make it on sunday but can make it saturday. Ill be at the trailhead at 8am. Just let me know so Ill look out for you.
Vondur I will ride around 8:30 ish. If there is a group at SJT I will probably ride there (especially if we loop the upper part of chiquita).
Nate the sjt is in the ortega corridor. Take the 5 south exit at ortega and the trail head is at the san juan guard station.
I'm leaning towards San Juan too(sunday), I probably won't be able to keep up with Adam and Stu, but I'm down for this ride.
I like chiquita, but I would imagine there is a ton of posion oak at the moment. Oh well, better pack the oak block! I guess it sounds like a San Juan ride.
Is the upper chiquita trail the trail on the right once you reach the "crossroads" after the meadow area? Rob and I did that last time we rode SJT. It is bitchin', especially towards the middle of the loop, that downhill is fun. Then, I had to do a few hike-a-bikes up the rocky section. It was kinda hairy because it was pretty hot, and we had never done that loop before and didn't know how much further we had to go until we reached Cocktail Rock.
Just take Ortega highway east towards the hills. Head east for around 8 miles or so. You will go pass Caspers park and keep going to the Ranger Station on the left side of the road, at the entrance to the Lazy W Ranch. It's easy to fly by it if you're going fast, so look for the sign that says "Ranger Station 1000 feet" which is just after you cross a narrow concrete bridge. Take a left at the Ranger Station and follow the road down for about 1 mile to the parking lot. You will know it when you see it. See you at 8:15 or so. I plan to start riding between 8:30 and 8:45. DON'T FORGET TO SET YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD TONIGHT. The early start should make for a cooler ride.
