The trail was BEAUTIFUL! Nice and packed, with just the one puddle at the top of the downhill section just prior to the Luge. I remember doing the Luge a few years ago-soupy mess! I swore not to do it again right after a rain, but today was SWEET! I agree, great condition. You've been doing a wonderful job out there, thanks!!!!

Thanks for all the positive comments!

I'm psyched it only took two evenings for one sort-of-old guy to repair a summer's worth of "damage" from thousands of descents. That tells me that mountain bikes aren't really all that bad on trails, especially when turns are banked and bermed, and at least one of us isn't using his brakes

Now it's time to trade in my shovel for my bike, and check it out for myself :)

Hey, Jim. Thanks for your hard work, and thanks to Mother Nature for providing the moisture that allowed for some excellent dirt. And Gregg, it was a pleasure riding with you today, even though I had to relinquish my usual status as the oldest guy for miles around.

Another round of applause for Jim and his helpers! The trail was is great condition last night, just a few minor puddles on the way up to OC. BUT WTF with the fresh moto-tracks??

A trailworker looks at rain like a skier or boarder looks at snowfall.. anticipation mixed with dread.. A storm can make perfect conditions, or cause avalanches. This rain was ideal for working on the trails, light and steady with very little run-off-- sort of like a foot of fresh powder. Oh yeah :)

I saw one set of motorcycle tracks on Wednesday evening. Whoever the rider was, at least they rode (the Luge) gently. There was some damage, but mostly in soft spots I'd filled the night before. If I'd seen the rider, I'd have tried to explain that wet conditions are when the trail's most susceptible to damage.

Jim is the trail master! There is so much more flow to the luge now! (and always fun to get to ride with him too!)

Rode the Luge this evening. You could tell someone had been working on it. It's the best the Luge has looked i.e. ridable, in several months. Mucho thanks!

Nerdgirl knows: No self-respecting mountain bike chick should have to visit a day spa to get mud on her face.

Revalimage realizes: You let that guy get out of sight, and he's dragging tree limbs off the trail.

Georgia of the Jungle understands: Its hard to be impartial with a mountain bike between your legs.

    Thanks, mcgong.

I just got off it, and it held up well to all this rain. There's a downed tree blocking the trail about half way down the Luge.. Its one of those charred trees that got burned in the fire. There were a bunch of smaller limbs that were also on the trail, but I cleared a couple and other riders got the rest. (If its still there tomorrow afternoon, I'll get it off the trail, but I was running out of light and didn't have a saw.)

Otherwise, things should be in great shape by the weekend :)

    Tree

Here are a couple of pictures of the tree. It caught me by surprise as I hadn't read this thread before riding. STT is still a little too sticky, especially at the first big switch-back. Was going to stay off the Luge and just head up to Old Camp and back, but when the mud came off my tires going downhill before the flag, it all went to my drive train. Major chain suck cut the ride short. Even emptied half my water on the chain and rear cage, but no luck. Went slow down the luge since do not like it when it is slippery. That probably saved me from going into the tree, because it is at a spot when I usually bomb.

First picture is looking back up the trail. Second picture is what you run into if you are going too fast. :)

I'm heading up to clear it now. Maybe someone will come along and help me heave it off the trail..

Rode it tonight, no mud sticking to the bike and tons of traction. Should be perfect tomorrow
