I took advantage of the current rain, and did some repair work on the Luge last night. Didn't see any riders between 4:30 and 7:00pm, but there were a few tracks. The conditions were wet enough to be borderline between providing a fun, muddy ride and making the trail susceptible to damage.

As usual, the STT will be the test for whether its a good idea or not to ride the Luge. Its hard to damage the STT, and if the mud gets really bad (often at the BIG switchback) its time to turn around-- or at least stay off the Luge.

When the rain tapers and the sun and wind dry things out, please go easy on the Luge. I've started filling holes and repairing summer damage, and these areas will need some TLC until they get packed down and dried out. Please roll easy over unpacked sections and avoid hard braking on soft soil, and you'll actually help finish the repairs. With another trailwork session (hopefully this afternoon) and some gentle riding, the trail will be in prime shape by the weekend.

    Thanks,

    Jim aka kioti

    Thanks Julie.

I plan on setting up another STR/STT trailwork day, but haven't picked out a date yet. Meanwhile, this storm rolls through and provides perfect conditions for some repair work. Nothing dramatic, just filling brake bumps and smoothing out berms.

I'll head back out this afternoon or tomorrow, depending on the weather. I'd rather not work if there's steady rain, but if there's a break I'll go today around 4:00. I've got a few extra tools lying around if anyone wants to help (we'd walk up from the bottom). Send a PM if you're interested..

    Thanks,

    Jim

Got out there and finished some repair work from the stream crossing to the flag. Had a little extra daylight so I re-worked this turn. The trail was already mostly dry and will be fine to ride if it doesn't rain any more.

I so appreciate your work on this trail. Its was a tough decision to cancel tonight's ride up there but I know the grooming of the trail is not from mother nature. We will ride next week and appreciate your time and effort.

And Georgia, watch for a group of three, if you're riding mid-morning.

I was going to start around 10, too. See you out there!

Jim, we're report back on conditions of the trail today. We all know how much a good, impartial trail assessment is needed ;)

Yes, an impartial trail assessment is crucial, the sooner the better!

(FYI, the tail end of that re-worked berm is going to take awhile to firm up. So try not to get to crazy?!?)

Jim - the work is beautiful. There is one small puddle on STT, the Luge is completely dry. The top section appeared to be completely raked free of the normal scree, the berms looked dry and packed. There are lots of tracks already on the Luge (including a moto) so your berm is holding up. Thanks for the effort. As always, it's appreciated.

We rode up to old camp and back this morning and the whole trail is in great condition. I have to agree with Craig, the work you've done is beautiful. I'd even venture to say the Luge in the best shape it's been in in some time. The burms are awesome.. this will save the trail as you can ride them without braking... thus no braking bumps! The shoring that we (Warriors) did several years ago at the top is holding up great as well. Do yourself a favor and ride this trail now... you won't regret it, grasshoppers... and while you are going down.. think about the effort put into this trail to keep it in this kind of shape. Great job, Jim!!!

How old did you say you were?

Glad you all had a good time. I love this trail and try to keep it fast and fun. Thanks for the positive feedback, thats what makes it worth while.

CalEpic: I had to leave one puddle or Nerdgirl would be disappointed in me.
