A number of people in el dooderino's weight-loss thread have expressed interest in doing this come January. Let's see a show of hands here to see who's in.

Here's the format I propose (not set in stone, so please feel free to give additional suggestions or changes):

    1. Time frame: Jan. 1-April 1
    2. Winner determined by % of starting weight lost (first weigh-in done by Jan. 8--a week's grace period; final weigh-in is EXACTLY on April 1, by 6 p.m.)
    3. Give periodic updates on your progress (say, at least three times during the span of the three months; more, if you like)
    4. What's at stake: strictly bragging rights, or do we vie for a prize? if the latter, i suggest everyone kick in 10 bucks, with the ultimate winner getting it all in the form of a gift certificate to their favorite bike shop.
    5. Not a hard-and-fast rule here, but let's try to help one another. share eating and exercise tips that are working for you or, conversely, things that have made you backslide.
    6. This goes without saying, but you're on your honor in this friendly contest, so don't be a cheatin' bastidge ;).

So let's hear it: Who's in?

i like the idea. besides, mountain bikers give each other so much flack from time to time that our form of "encouragement" might be a help!

that and i'd really like to get way down from 230lbs.

I like the $10 buy in. It gives it a bit of a competitive feel.

This means that all the participants can eat whatever the hell they want for the month of December! Pad those stats baby, and bring on the deep fried twinkies.

I like the $10 buck thing too. Where is that saved?

That's great, but how is it measured?

That would be ideal, but just being able to use your bathroom scale opens this up to more people being able to participate, i think. Still, if the majority of folks wanna go your route, i'm open to it.

You guys need to use the same scale for everyone and eliminate the error from scale to scale variation. Perhaps start the whole she bang off with a big weigh-in party.

Take pictures of what everyone's wearing, because unless you all want to weigh-in in speedos you gotta account for that. For the final weigh in they gotta wear the same clothes exactly.

I know a guy who did this for work, and padded his initial weight by wearing heavy work boots and stuff.

I know winning is not the point, but I'm just saying that now that you guys are making "credits" part of the contest it's gonna get competitive.

You should just have the 3 top finishers be the finalists. And decide the real winner with a beer drinking, or hot wing eating contest, or most climbs up 3 Biatches decide the overall winner. Like they do for the Singlespeed Worlds.

I'll be coming off nearly two weeks of vacay time, so that almost surely means lotsa good (fattening) restaurant eating. Still, i'm not going to consciously stack the deck for myself. I have hardly any sweet tooth, so i'm immune to Christmas sweets, fortunately. :) I was 193.5 el bees this morning, and i plan on being no more than that at the time of the first weigh-in.

Not a bad idea, also fat doesn't weight more than muscle. 5 pounds of fat is 5 pounds and 5 pounds of muscle is 5 pounds, density has nothing to do with it

damn, i could lose 25 pounds and this could be the motivating factor. However, unfortunately (or fortunately) I don't think I'd win

from 195 to 170 would be awesome, but i'll still chip in $10 to lose to some bigger dude

It could be fun to get everyone together, but problematic since we don't all live that close to each other.

If you pulled that off, that would mean you lost nearly 13% of your starting weight. I gotta think that would put you in very strong contention. Going by percentage rather than total el bees lost helps level the playing field.
