So, SRAM has something called Q factor dimensions (156mm and 166mm) on their XX and I think XO cranksets, which I take to mean the distance between the crank arms at the hole for the pedal if you were to line up both crank arms facing the same way. I believe the wider is to accommodate full suspension frames that require a bit more pedal clearance. Does anyone see any drawbacks or compromises of using the wider "Q-166" on a hardtail? If so how would it impact the ride? This measurement is not something I've seen before, or maybe just never paid attention to.

    Thanks for any info.

I believe most mtn cranksets have always been 166.

Road cranksets on the other hand have been 156.

Offering mtn cranksets in 156 just allows for narrower fit similar to your road bike.

Also 156 will not fit all Mtn bikes, including some hard tails. There use to a fit guide to determine if the narrower Q factor will work.
