hey guys Not sure whats wrong with my calf. It doent bother me when I ride but it hurts to run and walk. I was lifting alot and then it started bother me after the VQ... so I thought it was just sore from the hike a bike and then a few days later I started lifting again and did the Sprocket Head Foot race. It feels like its been getting worse every day. I havnt run since then. The tendon is sore and realy inflamed and it hurts realy bad in 1 spot. And sometimes I get shooting pain in it when I'm walking. Do you guys think its just tendonitus or maybe a pulled muscle or something? Ive been resting it and taking advil and havnt gotten much releif.
You may have achillies tendonits or plantar fasciitis. Both are repetitive stree injuries caused by too much running mileage too fast. It might be a tight gastrocnemius or posterior tibial muscle. I say rest, ice and ibuprofen. Once the inflammation eases, you can stretch it out to lenghthen and relax the muscle. Other things to look into would be massage therapy (works wonders!) or Active Release Therapy to help things heal. Good luck. Injuries suck.
It sounds like Achilles Tendonitis, but that would depend on where the pain is located. If it's high up in the calf muscle it could be a strained muscle. Best to stay off it a few days and see if it gets better. Ice and elevation along with some Vitamin I would help too. If riding doesn't hurt it, what about riding out of the saddle? You definitely use more calf and lower leg when doing that.
Good call on the PF, as a tight PF can't result in calf pain. Try doing these two things to see if they help. Roll a golf ball along your PF to massge the muscle and break some of the adhesions(?). Secondly, freeze a water bottle (evian, arrowhead, etc) and ice the bottom of your foot. Good luck.
I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Try alternating a heating pad and ice every 20 minutes. Stretching it while it's heated up will help too. A deep-tissue massage probably couldn't hurt. Edit: And you could always pound some pickle juice.
I use a frozen golfball. PF causes all kinds of issues. The classic syptom is heel pain like you're standing on a pebble in bare feet. If it's mid-calf pain, it could still be PF. Try the golf ball trick. If that doesn't help, you might try rolling your calf out with a foam roll or a massage stick. When my calves bug me, I stand in the unheated pool in my condo complex until I'm totally numb, then I go sit in the spa until I warm back up. That's also a good trick for keeping my injuries from reoccurring. Look around on the web for some more how remedies for calf pain; running sites may be helpful.
AAAARRGH! Pirate therapy...a little different than physical therapy, followed by lots o' rum since you still have yer head........
Grasshopper Matt ... listen up!!! Whatever you do, you want to take care of this now.... don't let this become a nagging injury that may continue to haunt you in the future. If the pain is not getting any better, go see a doctor and get his opinion... Remember, it's very hard to diagnose something over the internet. You need some hands-on care. Also remember that you have a MTB scholarship at stake here and you don't want to screw that up. Hopefully, this is just a case of overuse.. and rest and PT will help to prevent this from reoccurring. Listen to your elder.... Soaring Falcon...
"You can also try a good bleeding, or maybe some leeches, since we now know it is probably a tiny demon in your calf." - Theodoric of York Seriously, OMR just gave you the best advice you've gotten all day. Go to the doctor if it is getting worse. Especially if your meal ticket depends on riding.
Sounds just like tendonitus to me. I was diagnosed with tendonitius in my fibular brevis muscle last month. The pain was really close to my achilles so I was really scared. Calcaneal Tendon (achilles) takes a longgggg time to heal. Fortunately for me the fibular brevis muscle is a small supporting muscle, so the doctor said I could continue my training! I had a sweet hook up of seeing the podiatrist for me Angels and Ducks. If you need I can give you his info. As for now stretching and anti-inflammatories.
Yeah. A fibular beaver muscle is the guys unit. The fact that its close to his Achilles is quite impressive! go write your medical porn elsewhere. this is a family establishment.
If know your bones, fibular tranlsates into fibula. Brevis means short, kind of like breif. Its all latin. So its a short muscle next to the fibula. Duhh!!
