Spent the day at the Oaks working on a few spots of the trails. First is the right turn on cactus after the rock roll. I was always skidding into the bushes, Not any more! Second is coming down moto at the right turn just before the dangerous left that you can miss and go over the edge. Now I think you can almost make it down with out brakes, J/K. The last two are pics of stuff I did a few weeks ago I just beefed them up for durability. I didn't get to test it out so you'll have to let me know how it rides.
The pics don't work. Did you build up a berm for that first turn on cactus? I thought the small drop option before it was put in so that people who couldn't make the turn had a p-line. What trail is "moto?"
Just curious. Can't tell much from the pictures but was there any thought given toward water drainage and erosion control?
No that berm is solidly built, this one is farther down after the S turns. Sorry moto is yucca, I was told its also called moto for its moto track feel. Yes water drainage was already built in and utilized to limit these issues.
The little berm you built on Cactus, won't last.....too small, too soft. Same goes for the small little berm on Chutes, just above where the rollers are towards the bottom.
I hope you weren't working on the new sections of trail, put in within the last 3 or so years. A trail builder, that's proven to build sustainable trails, was hired to put them in and altering them could be detrimental to the sustainability of these sections.
Looks like a lot of work. Thanks for the effort. Hopefully your improvements will blend into the concerns listed above about sustainable, coordinated efforts. I've seen trail stewardship get ugly with a bunch of people of differing opinions making changes to trails that result in anger and injury (ATT in SD). Hans the builder seems to have the official title of trail boss in Oaks - work should be coordinated with him. Cheers!
Yes they are soft as they will need some moisture to help with that. Unfortunately it doesn't look like rain is in the current weather forcast so they will probably need to be reworked before the next rain. I didn't want to build big berms either as I don't think they are needed in those spots, though they may need to be a little bigger as you may be insinunating. I did not interfere but utilized the existing protection features that are already exist and if It does create an issue I will correct it. But these turns were actually causing an issue as many tire tracks were running off into the shrubbs and plants. Thanks for the all the Info, as I do not aim to ruin trails or make them perilous to others. I would like to get advice/input from Hans as he has done a great job with Oaks. How do I find him as I do not know him?
I rode there this weekend and it was great to be out there. Thanks for doing all the trail improvements. The berm on yucca is a great addition to that trail it definitly helped with that right turn.
Thanks, that is the better one of the work that day. I can see that I'll have to rework the others in the future. I didn't get to ride them that day so I was just eye balling it. When I did some other maintenance I had my bike with me so I was able to dial in the work really well. http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/trail-conditions/61235-trail-maintenance-done.html
Thanks! I saw the vids of you hitting the big drop and I have to say you made it look easy. Hows the shoulder?
Thanks for that info. I was woundering who to get in touch with about maybe placing some pavers or something in the first right turn at the top of chutes as that corner is never joing to last through the years with the amount of use it gets.
