    back to this thread....

90% of the SS I see are running a Fox Vanilla...any particular reason when the float and talas both come in 160? seems like the Totem is the other popular choice, with a few people out there running dual crown boxxers (A-C being similar to the Van) :?:

if one were to build up said bike for DH, what fork would be best suited?

    paging Lee....

I love my Intense SS. I use it for everything. I can pedal it just fine (I've done the 3 B's on it ... as well as Maple Springs). It's enough bike for me, but then I am 5'3" and 115 lbs, so maybe I am not the best person to ask! I do super technical shuttle runs on it, and I have never found myself longing for something with more suspension. The bike is really fast and easy to handle. It drops just fine. It rails corners. I honestly love it. Before this bike I had a Nomad and a Demo 8, and I like this bike much better.

By the way ... I have Vanilla shocks on it. I like coils. I like Fox. It was an easy choice for me. You are going to most likely climb seated on the thing anyway ... it really hasn't affected my climbing.

The difference between Float and Van is preference. Some like air some like coil. I have the talas only because I had it already, I have condidered seeing if I can pull off a trade Talas for Float. It pointless to have a talas, if you lower the fork it may help to climb but you hit you pedals even more. As for the Totem you will slack it out little less then 1 degree and raise the BB about 1/4". If you are going full DH I would say totem or a boxxer. The boxxer is going slacken it out a little over 1 degree and raise BB 1/3". But then if I was going to build a full DH bike I would have not got a SS :?:.

So I would go with Fox 36, RS Lyrik or Totem.

    ah....alright... :)

The weight difference between the VAN and the TALAS/Float is relatively minimal. There is absolutely no reason to use a TALAS as it costs more, more unreliable, and there is no need to lower it. The Float is a viable option. Because most people use the frame with a coil shock, it makes sense to use a coil fork - and the VAN 36 works really well.

Although a coil sprung Boxxer would perform nicely, it is a dual crown fork, which greatly takes away from the usability of the bike as a trail/play bike (i.e., switchbacks and cross-ups) with no real benefit over the VAN 36. Make sure to get the 1-1/8" steer tube and use a flush headset.

I personally would not even consider using a Totem. The SSs that I've ridden with Totems felt all wrong to me; however, some people like how it feels with the changed geometry, so to each their own. Interestingly, many of the guys who complain that the SS isn't very trail friendly also often have Totems or other tall forks. The Totem raises the front end height, slackens the head angle, and raises the BB - it really takes away from what makes the SS so special. The Totem at normal ride height isn't very Snow Summit friendly either.

the van rc2 can come with a 1.5" or so Fox websites says. Any reason to still get the 1-1/8" if i get that fork?

I would get the 1 1/8 for versatility. Plus more stem options. I also dont think they make zero stack 1.5 headsets, only reducers.

The 1-1/8" allows you to use a flush headset. You can't use a flush headset with a 1.5".

Even compared to the 40 on my big bike, I can't say that I've noticed any flex in my 1-1/8" Fox VAN. But heck, what do I know - I just ride the bike. ;)

Your 40 is a triple clamp... it has another crown to support the steerer.....and thus is irrelevant to our discussion

    SINGLE CROWNS
jig up a 1.5 head tube vs a 1.125 head tube fork... apply a point load to the axle.... tell me which crown will deflect first?

well its davidB... he could bulk up and be a real boy someday

But the point I was saying is that I don't notice any flex in my 1-1/8" single-crown VAN on my SS vs. the dual crown 40 on my M6. The 1-1/8" VAN 36 still steers with excellent precision - or at least good enough for me. There is no perceivable flex (and I've experienced a lot of flexy forks over the years!).

Is a 1.5" steer tube stiffer? Maybe (theoretically, it is). But, for me, it's not worth having to run the added height of a normal headset. The flush headset really puts the SS in an ideal geometry for me (others may desire differently, of course).
