What are you using your SS for?

I keep coming back to this bike for gravity styled bike that I can still pedal around. I don't see myself going to Mammoth anytime in the next couple years and would be doing more of the typical shuttles around so cal instead, so the bigger bikes would be too much for me right now (cost wise too).

I'm hearing pros and cons about the low BB, and the bob when pedaling in granny gear (which I'd probably set up 1x9 anyway)

    tell me more

I love my Jamis Dialbo 1.0.. its only 2 years old but still has very great gravity to me.. only thing i dont like is the forks.. manitou stance 170mm.. way too plushy without compression setting.

go big or go home! first, you'll get the SS, be amazed by the awesome travel it has. then you'll ride somebody's 8+" bike, and suddenly need one of those. trust me, I know how that goes

plus, why get a big bike and not go to mammoth? it's some of the most fun I've had on a bike lately...

with respect to BB, it's not a huge problem depending on the length of cranks you run. I've got 175mm on my reignX with the same BB height, and no problems. sure, I banged a few pedals on it, but once you discipline yourself and get used to clocking the pedals right it's no big problem.

dunno anything about granny gear bob, but if you go 1x9, who cares. plus, 1x9 rocks and will make you look like a cool DHer :bang:;) (seriously, I think you're a strong enough XC rider that the 1x9 wont be a problem)

Are you talking the Intense SS or just SS in general? I really wanted the Intense, but after riding it, I dont think it had enuff "pedal bike" in it for me. I dont think the seat tube is very long either? It was very low to the ground also.

Well, I think I've expressed that I like the SlopeStyle for many types of riding. Yes, it does have some shortcomings (what bike doesn't?), but some of those shortcomings are what makes it perform so well in most other situations.

Although it's DH worthiness should be obvious, here are some "trail" photos. Some may recognize a couple of the climbs at Gooseberry Mesa - third and last photos (both very steep rock climbs). I thought it was kind of funny watching a few XC racer types walking up the rock shown in the last photo, then watching them watch me. The penalty for failure there is really bad - it would be really hard to stop or dab. To get an idea of how steep it is, note how far I am leaning over the bars.

Well mine is my trail bike, light DH bike, hmmm XC bike yeah i think that covers it.

It pedals pretty good i can really notice the pedal bob if i am in 22 tooth up front if you stand and hammer its not very bad in a middle ring(36 T). The Bottom bracket takes a little getting use to but it corners like a dream.

Like I have said you are more then welcome to try mine out.

    Dave,
What's the point of getting a slopestyle when you're just gonna end up with an M6 just like everyone else who owns/has owned a slopestyle?

Listen to Bryguy and go full DH from the get-go and you will save yourself some cash.

I have both a full DH bike and SS. Honestly I dont see myself riding my DH bike anywhere in socal anymore. The DH bike will be for places like Mammoth, Whistler, etc.. I hope Mark will chime in on why he went from a SS to a M6.

Let me add if I had to get one bike and wanted something bigger I would split the difference and get a Socom with the new dropouts. The new dropouts make it almost a short travel M6. I think one person on here has a Socom with new dropouts.

I didn't even think they had released the new dropouts for the socom yet, and that was coming from denmo/roger, who usually know what's going on with everything intense.

but that's a good point, a socom might be better. lighter, faster, and able to be taken to mammoth on the odd weekend, but still able to built down to 33-34 some-odd lbs.

I will say, I've been a proponent of a lighter, small travel DH bike, but I would take an M6 over a SS. I have my trek for climbing...

^see that's what i'm thinking (with my very little dh knowledge and even less time on a dedicated bike)

    1. the m6's are just too much $, i'd run out of money after the frame + fork
    2. Seems to be too big of a bike for what i intend to use it for (racing + local shuttles)
    3. I really need to get my leg over a socom/SS. I sat on a m6 a couple times and the gears haven't stopped spinning since
