I bet the only reason EC is going is because he found out they have a bus run to the ranch house on the weekend.

Its unlikely that will happen in New England... the local trails are flat, and the mountains are all lift assisted .

For a social/newbie ride, I think we should choose something more friendly to the newbs. I've never been to Daley but from the comments it seems like there might be better choices out there. I'd love to do this ride with my wife, but she is definitely a newb.

 

the ride will be at daley. it will NOT be a hammer fest. it is a ride to celebrate a friend.

I just received some bad news everyone. Stone Brewery will be CLOSED for a corporate event on the 2nd! Does anyone have any other suggestions? I was thinking we could have a BBQ similar to the one that was held at Aliso Woods over the summer. There are built in charcoal BBQ's and picnic tables and full restrooms.
Thoughts?

 

BBQ and beer in the park is a good solution to me. I'll bring beer...lots of beer.

Where were you thinking of doing the BBQ--at Daley? Not sure what the alcohol policy is there.

I assume you mean BBQ at the adjacent Lake Dixon area. As much as I like hitting Stone after a Daley ride, the BBQ idea is probably much easier & better with a large assorted group.

Does "newb" mean new to STR or a mtn biking beginner? I'm the former but not latter.

Daley can be great for beginners, but not the full route. Fitness will probably be a bigger separator than technical ability. The Daley loop I usually do looks just like the geoladders route; same CCW direction too. It's possible to have split-off options for beginners and all wind up ending at nearly the same time. Maybe one at the start of Hidden Spring trail ("Cardiac Hill") and another at the Burnt Mountain turnoff.

On the other hand, all sticking together for social reasons sounds "friendly".

I've never ridden in a group bigger than six...but I guess some do it frequently...isn't the dust going to be really bad?

Just checked the Lake Dixon site--looks like alcohol is not allowed except at the campgrounds. Anyone up for a sleepover??
