'skipping' while pedaling - hub? rear derail?

Fella's,

was riding fenceline last night, and was trying to torque up a big hill.. and all of a sudden, the bike would skip....

thought it was a derailer adjustment in the rear... but i believe that is set great.

Is my hub skipping? how can i tell?

shimano disc hubs on sun rims......

any help is appreciated.... skipping was cutting into my riding fun...

 

It's tough to diagnose without actually testing the bike.

Confirm that the skipping occurs in more than one gear in the back. If it does, it may be damaged or sticking pawls in the rear hub. Fortunately, Shimano freehubs are easy to remove to inspect the pawls.

the chain would skip or the hub would skip?

have you put on a new chain or cassette recently?

 

Also check if your Der. hanger is bent or not causing the derailer to be out of alignment.

 

it would skip in a myriad of gears......

im inclined to think its the hub. (great.... sigh)

recently put new race face chainrings, and SRAM super chain....(32 bucks at jensons). it has been great for weeks! just cleaned and lubed the chain the other night....


if its the hub.... is this the part that failed?

Same thing was happening with my son's Kona. It was driving me crazy. Also the drl hanger didn't even look bent.......but it was#-o

Yes, the freehub part you linked to is correct. But before you buy parts, take your freehub off to inspect it. Perhaps the pawls may simply be sticking from old grease (crossing fingers).

Also, when you say skipping, do you mean the cranks pedal forward without the bike moving the same amount? Could you describe your skipping?

 

cassete is a few months old also.... fresh grease.

no sticky link in the chain, as that would make it skip at the same link everytime.....

this 'skip' is more impacted by force.....
chain is in bitchin shape (newish) and cleaned and lubed.
derailer is adjusted.....

skipping = yes... cranks turn while riding, and the cassete spins without turning the wheel. not a chain skipping on the cassete......

do i need any 'special' tools to take my hub apart?

Its either the cables loose(My road bike had this problem) or the hanger is bent....

 

If the cassette freewheels in drive direction....

Is the cassette lock nut torqued to spec?

It may be a worn/damaged engagement pawl in/on the drive hub.

Might be saveable, might not. Gotta get in there and inspect.

 

i was lengthening the sheath, by backing out the knob at the shifter..... thus tightening the cable

ill investigate

 

Could be that the chain is the wrong width & not sitting on the cogs, if you have the old chain you just took off put them side by side, make sure they match

 

ok... news flash!

one of the links had a bend along the longitudinal axis of the chain! popped out 3 links and replaced with leftover sram links. used my chain breaker... and have a tight link now.... (drove the rivit back in, and it is very stiff....)

work it back and forth and it should loosen... make sure the pin is in properly...

 

i snapped my derailler hanger and i check it before every ride and it was straight... and the worse part is... i was coasting when it snapped!

i've been told skipping could also be the rear cassette is worn?
