.... My first singlespeed was a steel Diamond Back Apex from the early 90's That was my first m-bike. A 1989 in Smoke Blue. 30 pounds full rigid#-o
29'er not harder Well, SS'ing Hodges is alright, but SS'ing LPQ is lot's of work. On a 29er it'll be that much harder. Can you clean Powerline in 32:20 now? On a 29er, it'll be even harder. If you run the same gear ratio 26 & 29 yes the 29'er will be harder due to the larger wheel. A rough rule of thumb is to ad two gears to your 29'er and it will be close to a 26'er. When I had my 26'er SS I ran a 18 in the rear. When I got my 29'er I went to a 20 ps. OT lots of good advice on chains in this thread. You need to buy a new SS specific chainring, cog and chain. For your sake don't learn the hard way!
That's what I was thinking. The gearing changes because of the larger wheels. My intention is to build something that makes me work a little harder on the easier stuff so the harder stuff is just fun.
True, but if you can't climb stuff in 32:20 on a 26er, the gearing change on a 29er would be pretty big. Sorta like running a satellite dish instead of a cog.
Correct There was an formula I used to calculate what was needed. Inches per revolution of a 26" wheel vs. 29" wheel. This was like 4 years ago so I don't remember what it was#-o Google!:bang:
.... Doug no not really. I run a 20,21 and 22 on my 29'er. As a matter of fact Padre on this board suggests running a 23 for the CC / VQ. He ran a 23 last year and had his best time:bang:
I'm not talking about you in particular, I'm talking in general terms. If you were to run a 32:20 on a 26er SS, then to compensate for the 29er, it would need to be a 22 or higher, and hence the "satellite dish" joke. It's all good, I'm just trying to help/offer my .02.
I know you were not talking about me. Just trying to point out that 29'er SS's are not harder. There are many differnces with 29'ers that have people scratching their heads. Like HA's on 29'ers. Just trying to point out that a 22 is very common
I have a Manitou Minute fork sitting in my garage that has V-Brake posts on it. You are welcome to it for $75. (Assuming you are looking for a suspension fork and not rigid.)
](*,) the Forte SS kit does not fit the hub since it's threaded and not splined! DANG! Anyone know of an SS kit or possibly different SS parts that resolve this problem?
You need to use freewheel cogs. Ill post up some links for you if you are going to be using that hub.
I'd rather do that than have to go and find another wheel with a splined hub or have the current one rebuilt. Cog: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/CS409D01-Surly+Track+Cog.aspx?sc=FRGL Lock Ring: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/CS308D01-Surly+Track+Lockring.aspx
Freewheel or Freehub Ive been doing a lot of reading on using freewheels. Its not as easy as using a freehub. It seems like even with redishing and spacing of the hub it may not work. Since I have no idea how to properly redish a wheel and the LBS will be doing it for me. Im debating if its worth doing. It might just cost me the same to find a freehub. Ill still might try it though since ill be getting a 20 tooth freewheel to try out thanks to 1FG rider.
Glad you mentioned this. I'll bring it out to the Loop Thursday night. Northshore, I have a 17t freewheel if you really want to feel the burn. I didn't think of it at the time but it's the original to that wheelset.
1FG- Pretty cool the way you are helping the Homies out!   Your act of kindness will be "returned" with another one. Trust me! Too funny: The NINER stays home while the '78 Schwinn goes on all the rides. Haha! P.S.- The bike looks even better in person!
Go figure. I spend $2,500 on a Niner blingle speed and the bike I ride the most has a 30 year old frame and built up with mostly used parts.:?::?:
This is not for a freewheel setup!!! These parts are for fixed-geared bikes. COLEKO, against better judgement, I will try to remember to be at the loop tomorrow night with the Titec handlebar, if you still want it. My back has been feeling a lot better, so I may try riding (gearie).
