the thinner cogs will gouge your freehub body. Lots of force concentrated on a small area.

try surly or endless or niner cogs.

    7) A shimano cassette goes 11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30-34.
The only gear that matches what people suggest is the '20'!

The 11/32 and 12/24 cassettes have 18 tooth cogs (at least the XTR cassettes I use do).

    11/32 > 11-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32

    12/34 > 12-14-16-18-20-23-26-30-34

But I missed if the OP said what cassette he has, so this may not matter.

Those cheap BMX cogs will work fine if you have a steel freebody. Which I believe the lower end Shimano all has.

You can probably use those canti-lever levers with V-brakes if you use a problem solvers travel adjuster.

Second thought, since you're going singlespeed anyway, just ditch the lever/shifters and buy some Avid Speed Dial brake levers for about the same money. These are great btw.

buy one of the bmx cogs for a few bucks, it'll work fine. your bike more than likely has a steel freehub body so it wont hurt it. i have an aluminum freehub body and it didnt dig in too bad anyways.
This is your first SS so dont go too crazy. just make sure your chainline is straight, you have unramped cogs/chainrings, and you have proper chain tension.
Not so spam your thread, but i make and sell single speed chainrings and cogs. I'd be willing to give you my old steel bmx cog and some spacers if you buy a chainring. That way you'll be pretty good to go.
I'd give you the stuff anyways, but the shipping would cost more than it's worth if i just sent that alone. Do you know what bolt pattern your crank is? I doubt it's 4x104bcd, but if it is, i could even hook you up with a blemished ring since i got a few kicking around.

Thanks! Do you have a website? I'll have to check my chain ring bolt pattern. It's XT crank but it's old stuff (square tapered BB, Micro Drive something like that!).

I'm having so much fun just talking about resurrecting my old Klein hardtail!! :bang:

Yeh, yeh. My mommy taught me to never refuse free stuff :D  Thanks!

You guys are going to have so much fun this weekend! I'm so jealous!

I've been sooo busy i have yet to have time to put up a site, but hopefully soon!
Do you possibly have the type with the removable spider? Your large ring would look like a seperate piece that is held onto the crank arm with a big lock ring, and the other rings would bolt to the big ring. If so, i'll be making some single speed specific stuff for that crank. Post up a picture if you can.
Here's a link to my for sale thread on here with some of my work in it:

That's some nice stuff! Let me get some pictures of the spider and rear drop outs during day light this weekend.

I like the rightside-up/upside-down bottle opener and chain tensioner. Very cool and much sleeker than the Surly model.

Attempted the 3b's yesterday, and the first 2 were doable... third up to the tank...not so much. I think 7th/china is easier now :)

enjoy your SS... you'll dig it!

LOL! If it was just doable for you it sounds like I better start with a 32-22!

With a geared bike, I've always felt the 2 B's (never tried the 3rd B going up to the water tank from the long South side, always climbed up the short hill on the North side) are much easier than going up the China Wall switchbacks. I guess with a SS it's a different story because the B's are longer and continuous whereas the Wall offers some breaks and saddles areas.

Here are a couple of pics. The XT crank is a "Hyperdrive C" and has 5 arms.

The measurement from one bolt to the next is 55mm center-to-center.

It's 85mm center-to-center from #1 bolt to #3 bolt (counting counter-clockwise from the crank arm).

Terrific, I'll place an order with you once I know for certain how many teeth I want. I can trace a pattern and mail it to you.
