I can report on Southbay, that Bonita/ Rolling Hills the evacuation was called off & returned & my sister was able to return home last night. The wind was calm yesterday to help fight it from reaching Bonita/ Rolling Hills, unfortuantely the offshore breeze has now moved the fire back towards Spring Valley & Jamul. Hopefully these winds die down so fire travels slower & air strikes can get these fires put out. Also very impressive to watch was the Navy helicopters & other fire helicopters helping out down here in the Southbay. I've been impressed by how everyone is handling these tough times. Everyone helping each other & making sure to be safe & also all the volunteer & donations & having resources here. It proves we definitely learned our lesson on the Cedar Fire four years ago.
Yeah, east county always gets the worst of it. I have family members in both Scripps/Poway and Jamul. Jamul is not looking too good.
The air up here is the worst it has been all week. Huge smoke cloud I assume from Palomar/Fallbrook and then Pendleton off to the west is just hanging in the air. My eyes have been irritated since leaving the house. Sun was bright red on the way in. I took a few camera phone pics...
Doug, I heard on the news that they are going to try to hit the Fallbrook area hard today. One of the reasons the retardant was an issue yesterday was that power went out at the Ramona airport, so pumping the retardant was a no-go. Planes were having to fill at Hemet...a longer distance to travel... In some good news, a sea plane that they use in Canadian wildfires will be launched out of Lake Elsinore today...it can drop either fresh or seawater to cover a 3 acre area at a time. Will keep our fingers crossed down here. Looks like we are going to be fine, so I will put my thoughts toward those who need it most.
This thing is nasty! I just pictured them dropping mad water on the fire while blasting that song from Apocalypse Now.
Martin Mars waterbomber ..actually I thought they had pronounced martian, not martin, but not entirely sure.
this is just nuts... on my way to work, it looked like the Santiago fire is not burning as strong as the past two days and there is no black smoke from the area...However there is tons of smoke coming from pendleton area and could be seen from fountain valley.. keep your heads up guys
Nothing like the water from Lake Smellsomemore. Hopefully it does the trick in your area Doug. We're going to head back to Scripps this morning. Hopefully the winds won't shift and we won't have to leave again.
Speaking of SD, what's up with Aquaholic? (Hasn't posted on emptybeer for 3 weeks and no ID on STR?) "Ride of the Valkyries" by Richard Wagner
He's probaly been riding Noble for the last 96 hours with an axe and shovel... I think Allision has a line on him though.
Not sure why he's been quiet on MTBR. I don't think he's been directly impacted by the fires at all. Noble is fine, FWIW Just closed for now.
News confirmed that there is water/retardant being dropped on Fallbrook. The chief says the downtown area of Fallbrook is okay...the northern side is faring the worst. They are trying to keep the fire from entering the De Luz (sp?) area and the river drainage. Sounds like they are being pretty aggressive right now. Also said that there are dozers and other equipment up in Fallbrook...
At work, finally able to take a quick break... ...pray for Fallbrook please. I know others need it as well, but if you go to the interactive maps that show the burn area in orange with active fire in red, overlayed onto Thomas Bros map pages--the area where my house is, is all red--meaning active fire. I am praying that the water drops and retardent is doing the trick. I lost everything once and don't care to do it again. Granted I don't have everything I own in Fallbrook like I did last time, but I have a lot and my parents have everything there. ------------------------------ Anyone here from Mark/Sladnas?
