Damn!! with this heat I was thinking a evening run through el morro would be fun. not so much.

As long as there's more deer sightings than cat, I'm not to concerned.

why is everyone so worried? im sure the chances of getting in a car accident far outweigh being mauled by a mtn lion, yet we dont think twice about getting in our cars and drive while messing with the radio, food, friends, kids, etc....

Getting eaten takes longer than getting crushed by your steering wheel. Therefore it's scarier!

^ more like comparing fujis and red delicious.

it's all about assessing risk and the potential for harm. in the big picture, your car--or somebody else's car--probably poses a million times the risk that wild animals do...

and dachshunds kill more people each year than mtn lions (you can look it up).

mortality sucks, but sweating the little stuff makes jack a dull boy.

    I'm not scared.

    I'm not.

    ........

No really though, respect given where respect is due. Humans are soft and pink; be it water or land we don't really have that much going for us defensively (aside from a 4" pocket knife of course).

I know I'm late to the thread but there are absolutely cats back there. There is an OLD male cat occupying Wood Canyon across the road (they keep large territories). The security guard at Soka U kindly refers to him as "Ol' Toothless". The only thing he is dangerous to is slow rabbits these days though and I'm not sure he'll be able to chew through those much longer. He is pretty good size though and likely to scare the bejezzus out of anyone who hasn't seen a cat back there before. I've only seen him once.
I know a bunch of people that regularly do DC, Elevator, BVD, Stash, Mod Arts, etc and have indeed seen a small female back there. She has never shown any aggression though. Always runs away and has plenty of other fun stuff to eat. I wouldn't let her scare ya. Though I imagine it is tough to find a mate with all the other cats dying off back there. Always carry protection. :D

I think this statistic is true only for people who don't ride MTBs in wilderness areas on a regular basis.

    ok, how bout this then.

im sure your chances of dying from a traumatic mtb crash for outweigh your chances of getting mauled by a mt. lion.

    cuz i hate crowds

there have been exactly 2 incidents involving mtn lions and "outdoor enthusiasts" in california the last 100 years.

but, still, everyone should just stay out of emerald canyon/laguna coast and el moro until the state does a thorough investigation.

btw- also, please stay out of the water at trestles because a shark was sited in the vicinity...

    :beers:

Everybody keeps pulling the...you got a better chance dying XYZ...

    but the point is....

    It not the same as

Being eaten alllliiiiiiivvvvveeeee...by a top predator!!!!

Not only is it not the preferred nor anywhere near the top way to depart this earth...I think it is a very deep instilled fear for humans going way back

Just thought I would add that.

I think you just need to be aware of where and when you are.

    Gotta love this thread...

Then I'm 98% sure you had nothing to fear. When those cats get together the only thing on their minds is sex.

I feel better carrying pepper spray than a knife.

Even if they are just looking for sex. You're still going to get scratched up. Those love bites can be killer too!

usually when you find deer legs it was killed by people cuz when they go hunting and kill a deer they cut the legs off and take off with the body. If iits a mountain lion kill the carcass is normally in tack and the middle of the deer is ussually eaten because they dont have tearing teeth
