anybody know how to put one of those Saris racks on a car? I just bought the 3-bike one on e-bay, and i've got no idea how to install it ... damn. 8-[
well check out Saris' website for the PDF manual of the rack you just got. I havent dealt with Saris trunk racks (I think this is the type you got?) but I have dealt with Thule and Yakima, so they should be similar. For sedans the jist of it is rotate the arms so that the top arm is sitting on the top of the trunk and the bottom arms are resting near the bumper. Make sure all anchors are at the right spot. Oh and this will scratch the car, so be ready for it.
If you dont want ot do it yourself, there is a few local places that can install it for you for a fee, but with instructions and a buddy, its quite easy to install... I have a Yakima rack myself but im sure yours is similar and mine wasn't hard to install at all!
its really easy..... you just adjust it to your car so the lower arms are on the bumper and the upper arms are on the trunk, then the straps each say where the go...the top goes on the edge of the truck near the rear windshield, then the side goes on the sides on the trunk on the back and the bottoms go underneath the trunk, its pretty simple the car scratching can be minimized if you make sure your car is clean before putting on the rack because when dirt is underneath th parts that ouch paint it will scratch it, then you only have to worry about paint getting chipped where you put the straps and if you always put them in the same spot only one spot will be worn down...also wash your car after you take it off, or atleast where the parts touched the car to keep it from getting black from the rubber
just make sure it strapped tight, because I didn't strap it tight one day and now I have two dents on my trunk from the rack bouncing up and down.
cool. thanks for the advice. i think i got it. i'm a lot more worried about my bikes (Lemond Tourmalet & Trek 8000) than my honda civic. ha ha. so as long as those bikes stay put I'm good!
