There seems to be as many threads as there are fires. Thread merged.

    Kiss Whiting Goodbye

That whole area is gonna be toast, I was up at the top of Portola Hills, then up at the top of Modjeska Grade. You could see that the fire was getting close to four corners, it was about to start into the canyon below, it's already taken out the enterance by Outback. It looks like the firecrews are just letting it burn thru using Santiago canyon, Portola & Glen Ranch roads as containment lines. Keeping it of the homes on the edge. We left our house under a voluntary evecuation, the smoke is so bad it's just not worth staying. Grabbed all my important papers, and the bikes!

    Bummer! :(

It did look like the smoke was just over the ridge earlier.

    War Zone

I just came back from Sage's house (Sage from the Bike Co.) as I went over there to see if he needed help. He was evacuated earlier today. His house overlooks the entrance valley to Whiting Ranch, i.e the parking lot located off Portola. The best way to describe the way it looks is, it looks like a war zone. Whiting Ranch from the parking lot to 4 corners is gone, completely destroyed. Also 15 to 30 foot flames were burning up dreaded hill toward the houses in Portola.

Its a sad day, not just for the loss of an area I ride almost every day, the wildlife, vegetation, families neighborhoods, WOW.

Sage's entire neighborhood survived and he's back in his house, but Whiting Ranch is gone.

    more updated info:

Lawrence canyon is on fire. Lawrence is about 1/4 mile towards Whiting from cooks corner on santiago canyon. at this rate, RSM could be in some potential trouble.

now it's personal- the place my wife and I got married, rancho las lomas, is in lawrence canyon and is being evacuated as we speak as it's likely to burn. they're evacuating all the animals as we speak. for those of you that don't know about the place, check it out: http://www.rancholaslomas.com/

I hope the arsonist gets caught and that many of us never have a chance to meet the SOB

side note: anyone know if Brian Blair's (The Path guy, Donkey on MTBR, and all around good guy) been evacuated? last time we talked, he was living in Silverado

I think I remember seeing the gate to that place. Wow, looking through the gallery, that place is beautiful! That's a great place to get married! Very impressive. It would be a shame for that place to burn.

Thanks for thinking of me guys.....but I moved to Yorba Linda a few months back. Pretty thankful right now......but also really sad for my friends out there.

And really concerned about our family cabin in Running Springs...it'll be a miracle if it survives.

    Our Whiting Ranch

The Whiting Ranch that we knew and loved is gone, or at least changed forever. Last night Borrego trail was burning. Today, its burning up on the ridge, just below the Portola Hills homes, and over looking lower Cactus, Live Oak, and Serrano trails. I am so very sad that such a wonderful place, with such wonderful memories is on fire.

I can only hope that when they allow civilians back in, that the moutain biking community will be hosting service projects in Whiting this winter. I just dont think the county has the budget to clean her up.

When they do, my wife and I will be there.

We can make Whiting Ranch live again!
