Ride Report San Gabes, Sunday

I'm doing this the next time you guys go.

I haven't been riding enough, didn't want to slow you guys down today so I just did a maintenance ride at Fully. The reason I haven't had much time today is from work and I just moved to Hermosa. Now that the move is all done, and work is back to "normal", it's time to RIDE!

Glad you guys had a great time in the Gabes today, it's a beautiful place and oh so much fun to ride! :beer:

Looked like a great ride. I was worked from Noble yesterday though and didn't wake up till 7:00. Next time!

Man, I take a little nap, and you guy's get the RR's up FAST!

First off, thanks to Dave for setting up this ride, and Joe for meeting up with Jake and I for our inital climb.

This was only my second time riding this area, and Jake's first.

We had a short road ride, mixed in with some fun dirt, before the climbing started.

We started on up the LSM trail. Joe had mentioned that on weekends it was a VERY popular hiking area.
Man, they don't call him JoeTruth for nothing.
The trail climbed on a nice grade, with some tech sections, and switchbacks.

There were a couple of spots on the climb where I was a little nervous (as a Dad) but Jake takes direction well, and knows his comphort zone, so I don't worry too much.

Jake was climbing really well today. He never complained or asked how much further until the top.

He came real close to making this section. Remember, he's on his hardtail.


And he did have to push a time or two.


I think we were fairly close to our meeting point with the others when Scott and Mark caught us.

We had stopped so I could give this rocky switchback a shot.

As others have said, we made it up to the White Castle ruins, and grouped up.

This little break gave me a chance to get a couple of shots of my NEW ride!

I threw a new Manitou Nixion Elite on it, and it felt really good today in the chunk.


And I went with an "old school" Ringle Slamma Jamma headset I had laying around.

From here we did the "last" little bit of climbing, and the REAL FUN began!
I didn't get many pics after the DH started. I was having too much fun to stop!

Well, until I pinch flatted that is. Plato and I had that thing fixed faster than you could say....

"I carry two tubes. Oh crap, that one has a hole in it too!"

Towards the bottom we hit this nice little rocky, steep climb.

He made it up and over, and made it look easy!


And this was another little fun rocky section, pointed in the "right" direction.
It had a bit of exposure, but it wasn't all that ruff.

Jake was really killing it today. he said on the way home how he thought that this was his favorite ride to date, so far.
He also kept saying how much fun he has riding with such a "cool, nice, group of guy's"!
I'll have to agree with him on that one!

Looks like a great time was had by all, including my pal Mike. More than happy to lend him my lid, glad one of us got to ride :clap:

Oh, and thanks for correcting that Ladd Jasper/ stjunkie thing so quickly--I certainly had no problems with it, but Scott must've been livid (you know how uptight that guy can get ).

It wasn't so much the sleep as it was the legs after Noble on Saturday.

So, when's the housewarming/beach party? You'll have to join us for our next ride! This was my second time in the past two weeks up in the San Gabes........I'm sold! A little closer to home than the OC as well.

Somehow, this is one route I haven't done yet, even tho the Gabs are my fave local riding area. Lately i've had a thing for the High Country trails, as opposed to the Front Range.

Nice RR. Gabe and I woke up and we decided to head out in that direction. Saw you guys taking off. We actually didn't take the turn but went straight up the trail to the left?! I'm bad with names. We climbed up that for 6.50 miles and I took one look at what was a head and decided I had a good intro for the day. We did 13 miles and climbed about 2800 ft. Weather was great, not as hot as they reported, the ocean breezes were great. Next time we'll have to do the route you did. Glad you all had a good time.

 

You went up the Arroyo Seco and The Gabrielino Trail. Did you reach the waterfall? Sounds about the spot you all turned around. The Gab is an awesome trail. Not sure if it would be my first choice for climbing but it definetly is worthy of riding. One of the most scenic trails we have in the front range and all of So. Cal.

We didn't start our ride where you entered but we finished there. We came out where you went left in the Arroyo Seco but we came from the right (El-Prieto/Brown Mtn.)

 

For those that were on the ride, you remember how warm it was towards the end of our ride. Well, after I got home, we went to the beach and man, talk about a contrast in weather. Windy as heck and almost cold. Sun was out but sitting on the beach for an hour was a chore and more like being in a sand storm. I think it was about 70 degrees at Huntington Beach and 91 @ home. A little contrast. Regardless, it's always good to get to the beach and take in some fresh salt-air vs. smoggy air full of carbon monoxide. Them Kite Boarders were having a field day out there. In fact, I texted Pete (BrahMa) who's an avid kite boarder, telling him he should come out and kite and when I finally heard back from him, apparently, we was just there at the same exact spot we were at and most likely walked right past us as he exited the water. Small world!

 

Mr. Truth you need to get out to the beach more often. The temps were nice and the water was warm yesterday. We rode the Newport/Huntington bike paths for 6-7 hours yesterday. Basically from Huntington Pier to the Wedge.

I look like a god damn lizard today. Dark on one side, flip me over and i'm all white. It's only going to get hotter throughout the summer.

 

We didn't see the waterfall! Next time. There is so much to explore out there. I just have to work on building mileage so I can get stronger. That's what those rides are all about. The smog was killer on Sunday so we didn't continue. The views would have been awesome w/o all that damn smog.

 

Great trip repost. Thanks for sharing. I was thinking about you guys and the trail while I was working. Next time!

 

LOL! Thank goodness for the full face and armor. It kept me from looking like a raccoon. Unfortunately, I'm starting to get sore all over. Man that ride worked me over. I'm even starting to feel it in my arms and shoulders.
