    Need advice, getting worse...

    any topical treatments?

I'm going to take 2 days off but I really don't want to spend much more time than that off the bike

I do use chamois lube and it helps.

How is the saddle angle? If the nose of the saddle is pointing up chamois won't help, lube it.

Neosporin works well for me. Other people swear by diaper rash ointment, but for me...not so much. YMMV

    good luck

Sorry, man. Those things hurt like hell.

Prevention is key: never ride on dirty shorts, always use chamois cream on every ride.

Shaving might make it worse since it's an infected hair follicle. I recommend doing a google search for "saddle sores" or "folliculitis".

WARNING: I'm about to get graphic...

As painful as it is, I pop mine like a zit. Which is NOT what you're supposed to do because you can force the infection deeper.

Warm compresses might help along with an astringent: rubbing alcohol, witch hazel or hydrogen peroxide. If it gets worse or doesn't get better by staying off the bike, see your doctor.

    Best of luck to you.

I've got one that I've had on and off for two years! Always in the same spot. It's actually turned into a sebaceous cyst. It's fun to pop but it stinks like rotten death. TMI!! The doc said I need to get it cut out and stitched up but I haven't gotten around to it... it's only sporadic so it doesn't bother me much but if yours doesn't get better you might have to have yours scooped too! I had a buddy get his done and he had to stuff cotton into his open wound for a week and sit on a doughnut at work... not fun...

Learn from some of the horror stories on here! Best to just stay off it until it heals completely. I know, I know, perish the thought. Heck, at least it is easier with this winter weather pattern to stay off the bike.

hot shower, make sure the area is clean and do what zippy said. follow it up with cleaning, and polysporine works for me.

With shorts you get what you pay for. The cheapies in my cyclign wardrobe are the ones that have given me saddle sores, so I'll only use them on short rides or when on the trainer.

On long days, I wear the expensive stuff with a liberal application of Chamois Butt'r (Euro Style) and haven't had any problems since.

    Cheap Stuff:
    Nashbar
Bellweather (not bad, but wears out fast)

    Expensive Stuff:
Briko? (dunno, the tag ripped off)
    Capo Forma

If you're not riding bibs, it's time to try 'em. You won't go back to shorts, I promise.

What you have is not called Saddle Sore, its called monkey Butt.

Seriously, this stuff works pretty well.
theres also a type of chamois cream and what not, called deeznutz, i dont know if it works, but you have to give them props for a name like that.
heres a website for the monkey butt powder. try it.

yes, you get what you pay for with shorts. most stuff from pearl izumi have been good, but my fav by far is the hincapie stuff. amazing quality.

i've also virtually stopped wearing baggies. once i did that, they almost went away for good.

worth mentioning the saddle too. sometimes the saddle you have just isnt right for the body. the smallest stitching in the saddle leather could cause issues. i've found that fizik saddles are really nice because they have "wing flex" on the sides, and that allows just a little bit of shock absorption.

DeezNutz is Dave Zabriskie's chamois cream he came out with. He has the best mustache in pro cycling.

    Butt Paste

I have a 14 month old and I have used a product on her called Butt Paste for diaper rash. After a long day in the saddle I gave it a shot and it works great. I gave a sample to my buddy and he agreed, saddle sore was gone next day. You can get it at Target in the baby section. Pick me up some diapers while you are there.:)

Burst that sucker! Very painfull and often requires a needle and tequila! Once you get the blood and puss out the healing time is very much reduced. I found that letting it clear up by it's self took weeks sometimes, but a good lancing fixed me up in a couple of days.
As a side note since I stopped wearing French Knickers under my shorts the sores stopped:-k

The smaller sores I can often ride through. I use pain relief Neosporin and its pretty good. The riding friction often debrides them (ie: rips 'em off)

If it's a big infected follicle with a head you can try popping it. Ouch.
